Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Change Connection String to different Databases... based on user selection

    Hi All,

I am looking at porting a complex Access reporting app to Alpha Five Web 10.5 (Well really Ver 11 when it comes out as I need the Charting and Mapping modules!)
So being quite new to Alpha Five I have everything to learn and it seems I am going to be pushing the envelope to convert this App. To develop the Access app I have used every bit of my 15 years as an Access / VBA developer skills to create it, so I know I am really biting off more than I can chew with my current low level of Alpha Five knowledge but the client really really wants this on the Web so... what the clients wants the client gets..

So one thing I have to find out before I can even begin down the road is...
Can this be done and How it can it be done?
I need to change the Connect string (to a MS SQL Server) on the fly as I report over some 160 databases on the same server. Yes 161 is the current count! Don't ask!
OK, so since you did ask! I know seems madness but basically one for each Client/Location. It is partly for security but mostly for performance. If all the databases were combined it run like a dog!
Each database has the same structure so that is fine.

On the main Charting form the users are presented with a list of databases they have access to (based on rights derived from "Master" or "Control" database that I reference) They select one or more of them (By moving them from an Available list-box to a Selected list-box) as per this screen shot
Then I go cycle through each database, extracting the data I need for the given date range from that database and append it to a local table that is de-normalized and now forms the basis for drill down graphing/charting. the user can do.
So I hope I am explaining myself

Right now, in Access I have vast number of linked tables and Pass-Through queries (think queries that run on the SQL Server rather than the client) that I change the Connect String by cycling through the tables and queries collections and change the connect string based on the current database I am working with. I have a (I may say so myself) a highly evolved process for this and it works very very well.
So how in Alpha Five Web world of Grids etc would I change the Named Connection string on the fly like this?

Any advance would be gratefully received!

Re: Change Connection String to different Databases... based on user selection

This is pretty simple -- you can just change the connection string in A5 as well. The question of "where" can't be answered from the information you present, but there are plenty of places to do this.

I think you'll benefit a lot from this tutorial:

    http://www.downloads.alphasoftware.c...SQLTables.html

Once you've seen how things are done in A5, you'll see that your management is probably fairly simple and repetitive.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to Alpha Five! As you've already figured out, this board is a great resource.

Thanks Steve, as always you are the man with all the info, I will work through those videos
While I am at it I would like to compliment you on the "Introduction to Web Applications" Learning Series,
I am half way through and it is really really good. If that is the equivalent of the 101 course at the Alpha Five Uni courses then I hope you guys find time put 102 and 103 on video.

        Thanks again!

        Bruce
