Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to get borders to align in a report 'grid'

Maybe there is another way to get values printed in a grid with the grid lines showing...

I have aligned the fields in the row and turned on the borders. I can look at the field dimensions and going across the row, the left side of each field is exactly the sum of the field to its left start plus width. However, when the report is run and printed, some lines are heavy and there is sometimes a gap between two fields.

Is there a way to make it look like on Excel-printed grid with lines?

    Thanks for any ideas,
    Roger

    Hi Roger,
It takes a bit of practice to create lines just so with the report builder...vertical lines especially. If you want to export and then attach your report here I will tinker a bit.

      Mike,
Thanks for the response and offer.

I just did a quick test using HTML table in the report header section. I put a couple of fields in cells and it displayed fine. I am assuming I can get similar approach working in the detail section and use the table for grid lines and forget about fine alignment of the field borders.

Re: How to get borders to align in a report 'grid'

I attempted the HTML path, but ran into the problem of how to set the field attributes. Getting the detail grid section aligned with the header/footer using two different approaches does not work well. So I am back to how to set the field borders and get the alignment to look right. It seems to be an issue of how the calculations are done when building the PDF objects and probably some arithmetic rounding conflicting with the actual number of pixels available.

Maybe that is why there is the ability to embed a grid into a report. Then the grid lines would take care of themselves. However, we do not have the license for this solution.

        Are there other methods?

Re: How to get borders to align in a report 'grid'

Thanks to Mike C.!!!! Offline, he took a look at my approach and came up with an easy solution. Rather than put full borders around every field in the row, only put in enough borders to have exactly one line on any place where two borders might appear, so there are never any doubles or skips or place where two are so close as to appear bolded. Then will a little careful nudging of fields to make sure of top/bottom alignment, it comes out looking very good. So generally you can say the header has top/bottom and mostly left edge borders. The detail has bottom and mostly left edge borders. Likewise, the footer would have bottom and mostly left.

Mike also took the addition time to do a desktop sharing session late on Saturday night (we should get a real life Mike!) to show me (a new Alpha convert) some addition report writer tricks--much appreciated!

I am now struggling with this same issue. I follow what you did with the borders, but I can't figure out how to get the lines to touch vertically in the detail section. There's a very small space between rows. Can you post a sample report based on northwind or alphasports showing what you did? I haven't been able to find much video on report creation.

Also, could you address the problem of the borders not rendering when the field is blank?

Look at the printhtml() to get more formatting control - especially with borders.
