Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

The best host for Alpha Five Application Server - any advice?

I'm hoping someone can help prevent me re-inventing the wheel here ... I'm looking for advice on hosting Alpha5 Application Server.

A current A5 promotion offers an intro deal on ZebraHost.
ZebraHost has been voted "Best Alpha Host" for the last three years. And is the #1 choice of Alpha Five developers.
I've also just read http://www.alphasoftware.com/documentation/afas_setup/ which presents a good case to use my own server for the purpose.

Being an independent old coot, I'm leaning towards setting up my own server..........

    My query(s)?

    1. Who voted ZebraHost "Best Alpha Host"? When? (They aren't cheap!)
    2. Is it really "..the #1 choice of Alpha Five developers"? Why?
    3. Are there other recognised 'Alpha Five' hosts? Does anyone have any experience(s) to share?

I currently use Hostgator for hosting my websites and find their services excellent. Is there anything I need to be aware of in choosing a 'general purpose' host as opposed to an 'Alpha Five host'?

Can anyone who has set up their own server and is currently using same tell me about their experience and provide some insight?

    Thanks in advance ...
    Ron S

I did this. I do not use my own server now. I am not using the web app server. I just do not need it. I learned a lot and ran an alpha db application website from a 2003 server that was installed on a resurrected older computer. I also ran 3 other websites that were not alpha db through the was.

It all worked very well and quite crisp.

I later added IIs and moved the three other apps to operate there. It all still worked very well. No problems.

Now the con was my ISP must have discovered it and shut it all down. Be sure you have the proper stuff set up going in. I had to set up the router, was, windows 2003, ip's were murder for a short time, IIs as well as directing the .com's to the ip's needed to get here.

It was fun and now I know how to do it. That was the main thing I wanted to learn.

Later, I have plans for a complete website that will need this setup. I will take care of brighthouse then and pay the extra money.

Cost wise, you are going to run a server 24/7(including a battery backup or two)15-20 a month, need an isp with an ip that will not change 70.00 a month, plus you have to maintain all of it. You might be better costwise with a host provider. The host needs to run on a dedicated server with windows as I am told .

I now have all the sites on namcheap. No, I did not take the db wesite there.

I also ran the was on windows xp just as succesfully, but IIs on xp only lets you run 1 website.

Re: The best host for Alpha Five Application Server - any advice?

I didn't vote for "Best Host", but if I had, it would have been ZebraHost. I've worked with Clive for several years. Most of my clients use ZebraHost, and I have all my own sites on ZebraHost.

The reasons I choose ZerbraHost are:
Speed of setup. Clive can get you up and running very quickly...usually in a day or two. No explaining what Alpha is, no requesting permission, and no conflicting programs running or port conflicts. He'll even install the Alpha WAS for you. If you are like me, you want to get on with programming your site, not spending time fussing with the server.
Optimized memory for Alpha. Clive has worked out what programs can be used with Alpha to maximize the memory for the WAS to use. He knows what to install and what not. What email program, what backup solution, what anti-virus...and so on.
Modern hardware and software Yes, you could use XP on an old machine and tie it in to your cable provider, or you can run on a real server with fast processors, fast hard drives and a very fast internet connection. Which experience do you think your customers will prefer?
An easy growth path Most of us expect our applications to grow...more customers, more features, more revenue. With ZebraHost it is easy to grow. I have one client who went to bed last Thursday with one core, 2 GB ram and 50 GM hard drive and woke up Friday morning with two cores, 4 GB ram and 100GB hard drive. Didn't miss a beat.
Clive will work with you to meet your needs Need more IP addresses? Special firewall requirements? Two FTP servers? Email forwarding? Just send an email, and he is happy to do the heavy lifting.

So, I'd say that if you want to build a web site to handle more that Aunt Tillie's receipe collection, ZebraHost is worth a hard look.

And, no, he didn't pay me to say this....

I got my own static ip and box. I host only my own site (I'm not a developer) and I put other apps like Quicken, etc, on it, and use it as my home server. I think it costs me $65/month.

I think Brighthouse said 69 a month for a static IP. It would also mess up my other deal too which would actually be even more for me. That's not including the cost of the pc running 24/7.

I have a web site coming in a couple of months that will be hosted and probably by Zebra. It is not ready for prime time yet though.
