Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Update Runtime?

    Update Runtime?

I found the file to update Runtime. What's the scoop on updating Runtime if I haven't updated my main Alpha Five (I'm on 4138). Can I update the Runtime but not my desktop?

I'm a big chicken - have to update WAS on my server if I update my desktop, and I'm kind of afraid to touch it! But, I'm getting some "subelement not found" errors on desktop forms with grids on my staff's machines - that it sounds like might be cured by updating the Runtime. Can I do that? Can I update Runtime to a later version than my desktop? The problem with inconsistent versions is that you can create something that the thing reading it doesn't recognize, right? So if the thing reading it is later, that's not quite the same as the thing creating it being later - yah?

    Did that make any sense?

    Re: Update Runtime?

The Runtime app, RT Engine and Dev app. really need to be the same need to be the same. It's sort of a rule of thumb if you are regularly deploying apps. and changes.
If you develop in say Version 4309, update to the latest RT version and load it, you MAY have errors.
4138 is an oldie so the latest will probably fix a few problems in any case.

      Re: Update Runtime?

I make it a rule to update any deployed runtimes as soon as I update the dev app. This ensures consistency. You can easilly send/download the update for others and it will install in the directory you last installed the runtime on that machine. If you have multiple apps on a machine then I simply use the default location for the runtime and point to its exe file in teh short cut for all the apps. Some people install teh runtime in the same directory as the db. I have found this adds to issues down the track when you install more than one DB. Also you don't need to install any runtime for new DBs when it is done this way

        Re: Update Runtime?

OK - Thanks. I found the "old patches" place and will update my Runtime to match my desktop - see if that does the trick first. My web app is up and running nicely, so I'm not feeling compelled to update to current if I don't have to.

          Re: Update Runtime?

You should really keep all apps at the same update number. Fixes can be across the board and in the many relate to web side. You don't need to update evry patch, just the latest. They all include previous fixes. On the patches page there is a link to describe what patches include and why

            Re: Update Runtime?

Thank you Mark. This is an in-house admin app - on a network, with the database itself on my server. I used the install package thing on the first of my staff's machines. I saw that it puts a whole copy of my app on that C drive, all mixed up in the same directory with a bunch of other stuff. I pointed it at the correct file on the server and deleted as much as I dared (the obvious duplicates, the table files, grid files etc)

On the next machine I tried simply installing the runtime and double clicking my app file on the server. That seems to work just fine - runs the application.

I downloaded the patch, put that on the server, and double clicked it from each machine. The build numbers updated on their runtimes and the app is running just fine on all three.

So I'm curious - what does the install package do, other than install the runtime and the files for the app? Why was I seeing a bunch of other files in the project directory on her C drive? I'm only a few days in, so we don't exactly have a long track record yet. Is there anything I'll be missing by simply installing the runtime and pointing it to the correct file?

              Re: Update Runtime?

The install app will do a numb er of things in one package,

              1. Install runtime
              2. Install datafiles
              3. Register all components (There are about 5 crtical ones)
              4. Install the pdf drivers
              5. Create a shortcut with a splash screen etc

All of the above can be done indepentantly - so you are right when you simply install the runtime. Note you cannot simply install a patch. The runtime needs to be done first. The install maker is designed for you to package and pass on to a user for their install. the runtime install does registration and pdf as well

                Re: Update Runtime?

By "register the components" - If I'm simply installing the runtime and entering the license number, then opening the dbf file from it, is there anything I need to manually register then? Or do they get registered when I install the runtime? I assume so, because it all seems to be working.

I will be doing PDF reports at some point, so I do I need to install PDF drivers separately? Or does the runtime install do that? I would test it to see, but I haven't gotten to reports yet, so I don't know how or have any to test it on.

                      Course you did!

There is a sixth point that the installer does. The install also allows for you add addition files. Files like images for icon and splash screen etc. But a good one is the license so user and install and start running without having to imput the license key
