Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Remove Spaces In Text

Could anyone perhaps assist me with what is probably a simple problem, but I cannot seem to find the answer.

I have a field on a form that is entered by the user.

I need to have this field remove any text spaces that the user may enter.

eg. user enters: abcde 123 htrey

On depart the field should update itself to: ABCDE123HTREY

I would appreciate any help regarding this.

    Thank-you

    Peter

    Re: Remove Spaces In Text

Think maybe a combination of the REMSPECIAL and UPPER functions is what you require.
REMSPECIAL removes all none alphabetical characters and UPPER converts to upper case.
Therefore UPPER(REMSPECIAL("your field name here")) will achieve the result you require quite simply BUT and there's always a but if symbols such as - or * etc are part of valid date you wish to retain this approach will not work as these will also be removed.

On your form right click on the field and select events
Then select the On Depart event
A dialog will appear and you should select "Create using action scripting option"
From the category choices select Fields
and from the Action choices select Set Field Values
        Click OK
In the dialog entitled Set the value of the following fields click the green plus sign and select the relevant field - lets assume its called Entry1
        Click OK
In the options for How will you specify the fields value choose Specify an expression that evaluates to the value
In the expression box you should enter UPPER(REMSPECIAL(Entry1))
click next - click finish - and then test your form

            Pre-zero a text field
I have a similar problem. Am trying to pre-zero a text field being used as a record Id eg "00000008". Have tried using SUBSTR(num,8,0,",*") and then replacing the "*" characters in a for-next loop, without success. I could not find a suitable format for zeros. Any help you could give would be much appreciated - am using latest 10.5 build. Thank you.

              Re: Remove Spaces In Text

If pre-zero means fill to the left with leading zeroes

              padl(alltrim(num),8,"0")
              There can be only one.

                A caution to Peter.
Be sure you understand what Bob said with "REMSPECIAL removes all none alphabetical characters". Be complete assured that your entry will not have something like
[email protected] because remspecial will make it salesalphasoftwarecom. So you might want to consider:

                Code:
                ? UT(stritran("this and that"," ",""))
                = "THISANDTHAT"
