Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why does this strangeness happen?

I'm encountering an odd problem that I can't get my hands around. I have created a small script for debugging purposes. It asks for a password, compares it to a decrypt_string() value, then displays a message box which displays both the password and string to decrypt. On my development machine, running either the development or runtime version of Alpha5 v7, it works perfectly. On any other machine that I install it on, instead of the message box displaying the actual password and string to decrypt, it displays the actual alpha5 programming code, i.e., ="Password:" + var->pw+crlf()+"String:"+var->enpw. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this and how I might correct it? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Michael,
I would say that the variables may not be present on the other machines and so your concatenation is unresolved----sometimes Alpha will give an error or at times just present the code when this happens.....just a guess!

      Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I don't understand what you mean when you say the variables may not be present on the other machines. Please explain how this could happen.

Note: The 1st variable is a global which is initialized in the Alpha Autoexec script of the application, while the 2nd variable stores the password entered during the password request prompt. Thanks.

Re: Why does this strangeness happen?

I don't know much about encryption and decryption, but if this were happening to me I'd verify that any necessary settings required to support this functionality were present and active on all the machines.

          Tom,
The encrypt_string and decrypt_string functions are part of Alpha5. Shouldn't they be present in the runtime?

Re: Why does this strangeness happen?

            I should think so. Yes.

However, you haven't shown us the script so I thought maybe you were populating the variables from encrypted table values or something.

If you post your script I'll take a look at it with newer versions of Alpha Five. If you think that would help. I don't have vers 7 installed any more.

You have probably already done this, but you should verify that the other machines are running the same build of Alpha Five that you are using on your development machine.

One final thought. Do the other machines have any other trouble with xbasic scripts? Might faulty installation be an explanation?

And, finally (I promise) have you confirmed that the other machines run the same autoexec script as your development machine? if not, maybe the global you're expecting isn't present.

Re: Why does this strangeness happen?

              Tom,
You've provided much food for thought.

              1. I am populating 1 of the variables from a table where its encrypted value is stored as a character.
              2. I've verified the Alpha 5 build based and both machines I've working with are running the same verison of the runtime found in Help > About Alpha Five....
              3. I don't know if the other machines are having a problem as this is the 1st time I've seen this on another machine.

How do I confirm that the other machine is running the same autoexec script? Thanks.
