Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Auto-Suggest List = Only one of each

In an auto-suggest list in the last name field, there are 9 names which begin with the letter "B"; 4 of the last names are the same. When I type the letter "B", only 5 names appear, one for each different last name. Thus of the 4 names which are the same, only 1 of those names appear. This also occurs in the other fields where the value occurs more than once such as the first name and city fields. Is there a setting for this?

Also, FWIW, it's back to the slow routine where I type a character and wait 4-5 seconds for it to appear and another 4-5 seconds for the auto-suggest list to appear.

    Thanks for any insight

I've found out that through trial and error, that this 'may' be the norm for an auto suggest field. Say you are searching for a last name of 'Cass Lake' and you have additional fields to show such as 'first name' and 'Last Name'. When you type "C", all the cities beginning with "C" appear as it should. Now as you type the rest of the letters 'a-s-s' you are left with one record matching the name 'Cass Lake', no matter how many records there are which match 'Cass Lake'. In my case, there are 97 matches in the 'City' field and the only way to fine my record is to go to the grid and begin another search.

Am I the only one or does this happen to others?

This is happening in the Edit-Combo List as well. We must be missing a setting somewhere. I feel this is not correct, or at least should be selectable. In this video, where the Edit-Combo List is introducted, the dropdown list has multiple entries of the same value - in the case the last name. This is really a problem where you selected fields for fill-in because you're not getting the values to select that you need. Might be a bug. I've tried this on a couple of tables using Last Name where I have several duplicate last name entries and it's only showing Unique values for both tables.

When I set up an auto-suggest, this is what I do:

Field Name to Search : lname
Auto-suggest additional fields to display: fname, userid
        Display template: {lname}, {fname} [{userid}]

Then the list shows as such:

        Smith, Bob [0001]
        Smith, Carl [0030]
        Smith, John [0022]
        Smith, John [0043]
        Smith, Zack [0032]
        etc.

...oh, wait, I see know what you are saying. I'm looking at it again. Will update when I figure something out...

OK, does this do what you want?

          1) I used the lname, fname and userid fields as above.

          2) I also added the fname and userid fields to the search, but disabled them (Enable expression: 1=2)

          3) I hid the fname and userid fields, but added them to the lname Freeform layout ({lname} {fname} {userid})

          4) Then I added fname and userid as Fill-in fields in the Auto-suggest definition.

          5) When I select the last name, it populates all three fields, but the fname and userid fields cannot be changed.

Press search, and it performs as needed.

Of course, if you want to find all John Smiths, just leave out the userid field.

          I hope this helps.

Re: Auto-Suggest List = Only one of each

I'll work with it later this evening, If it works, it would be a work around because there are no instructions in the auto-suggest to this method. If one is seaching for all smiths, that's what I want, not 1. The developer and the user should not have to program and or run a 2nd filter. To me, the purpose of the grid is to show the search results when there is more than one match. Another thought is that when you are ssearching for a known record and only one record will be found, one should not have to go to the grid and then click a link to get to the detail view. We should be able to go to the detail view directly.

I didn't get that this is what you were after. When I set up an auto-sugggest based on only the last name, I get exactly what you asked for: All people with that last name. It's only when you start throwing in additional fields that it limits it (or so it seems to me).

Re: Auto-Suggest List = Only one of each

Hi Stephen, I don't think your suggestion will solve my issue because I need 6 fields available as search options. I've come to the conclusion that Alpha set it up to show only one record in the auto-suggest list even if there is more than one record matching the criteria and I have not found a setting to change this so the only way to see more than one matching record is to use the grid.

I'd like to be able to have the option of seeing all matching records in the auto-suggest list. However, if there are a bunch of matching records, the grid can be useful in sorting the records. It would also be helpful to have a setting so that if only one record is found, the user can go directly to the detail view, bypassing the grid. That said, I'm going to look at embedding the Search in the grid. That may solve my issue.

Than k you for taking the time to give suggestions. I do appreciate your efforts.
