Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Date Field - "Function requested is not supported"

I am new to Alpha5, so I will try to be as descriptive as possible. I have searched the forum and what limited instructions there are to no avail.

I am using SQL Server and have a date field (datatype = date) that I am attempting to enter using the grid - "Grid with updateable detail view". I have simplified it to two fields - the primary key field and the date field. The grid allows a date picker to be used on the date field. I place it by itself on a blank .a5w page and load it in any browser (I've tried Firefox, IE, Chrome, and Safari).

When I attempt to add or update an entry, I am given the error "Record was not updated. Function requested is not supported" (see attachment). But when I preview the grid on my development computer, it works fine. I have tried different tables and databases and still have the same problem. I have eliminated the date picker and still get the error.

The only thing I can narrow it down to (with my limited knowledge) is the function time("{grid.clientSideDateFormat}",<value>) in the Display Format setting (see attachment). I have attempted changing it and eliminating it without success. When I switch to the Xbasic view, it remains as .DisplayFormat = "time(\"{grid.clientSideDateFormat}\",<value>)" no matter what I have in that field.

I am using Build 4369_3712 for both my development machine and production machine. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Date Field - "Function requested is not supported"

Sorry I can't help more, but I just built a grid, SQL Server 2008, using the Northwinds Employees table which has a couple of date fields in it. One field I left as Date, another field I changed to Datetime, and I added a new field with a datatype of Date. The grid main part is read-only with a detail part. The display format for all date fields is: time("{grid.clientSideDateFormat}",<value>). They all work for changing, adding and updating... no errors.

Re: Date Field - "Function requested is not supported"

Thanks, David for checking on your system. At least I can isolate it to my server. I found a place that I could override (or eliminate) that statement, but it still did not work, so it must be a function that I cannot directly access. Does anyone know how I can get alpha to tell me the function it apparently cannot support?

        What's the statement?

Sorry, the time("{grid.clientSideDateFormat}",<value>) that I thought was giving it problems.

I'm fairly certain its the Alpha Web Server that is the issue since it works with two development stations I have. I was hoping I could figure out which function it doesn't like so I can either report it or make a work around.

time("{grid.clientSideDateFormat}",<value>) is the default Display Format so I wouldn't think there's an issue here. What versions of development and WAS do you have running? It's a longshot, but maybe there's an issue with the WAS install. You could try a re-install of that. As you say, if it runs locally, then it's WAS that's the culprit.

Re: Date Field - "Function requested is not supported"

For completeness of this thread, the issue is between Windows 2008 server and MS SQL Server. The WAP seems to not like the "date" type in SQL. It needs to be "datetime". I had to rebuild the web component after rebuilding the table with the right data type. Then it worked perfectly.

For people searching for a solution, here are several other threads for reference which had the same problem:
