Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to show text instead of key value in field with combo box?

    Hello!

I need some help. I cannot figure it out a solution for my problem. I have a table (lets call it Orders) with field CustomerId. For this field I have in Field rules set lookup into other table (lets call it Customer table), which contain among other fields also CustomerId, FirstName and LastName. I made separate browse for this combo box which display LastName and FirstName concatenated together with one space only.

When I open combo box I see what I want, but when I select one customer in that field with combo box instead of "LastName SurName" appear CustomerId which actually I want to save there, but I want to show Text not key. How can I do that in Alpha5? In Ms Access it's very easy to implement that, but here I can't figure it out.

So in short: I want to lookup for data into another table, save a foreign key into field with combox, but display accompanying data to the user from that table (in my case LastName and FirstName).

Take a look at the field rules for the productid field in the invoice_items table in AlphaSports. Your description sounds like you want something similar. You can choose to display and fill different values with this table lookup.

      Look here

For an example check the table lookup field rule for the product_id field in the invoice_items table of the AlphaSports Sample database.

I had checked Display as drop-down list box. The only problem is that I have two separated fields in Customer table (FirstName and LastName) and with above dialog I can set to display either LastName of FirstName. But I need both together in one field. I made for example Calculated field to display this first and last name together in combo box but I don't know how to show this two together then in textbox?

Using a table lookup field rule you will probably have to define the FirstName and LastName concatenation in a table level calculated field. You can then choose that field rather than the separate fields. Don't forget to reevaluate the field rules after defining this calculated field.

Stan. I already made that (I wrote in the beginning) for browse table i'm using instead of Default Browse. This display Ok. Problem, is that I cannot select or create such field to and then choose that field to show in textbox after I select value in combo box. I will made sample app and attach it so it will be easier to understood.

Try the attachment again. I don't see it here.

I attached now one sample app. I want that will be displayed "King Anna" instead of "King" but actual saved value inside has to be "0003" which is Id of "King" record.

It works for me in AlphaSports. I created a table level calculated field (comb - concatenating product_id and description), not a calculated value. I edited the lookup in the field rules for the invoice_item to also display this field.

Can you modify my app that way and attach it back. There should remain visible only 4 fields like is now (Order Id, Order Date, Customer and Ship Via).

I modified your customers table to concatenate the last and first names. I modified the field rule table lookup to display this new field. The lookup stores/fills the matching customerid.

Don't forget that while you see the name in a layout, the customerid is actually there.

Try this in the interactive window.

                        Code:
                        tbl = table.open("orders")
                        ? tbl.CUSTOMER_ID
                        = "0003"

                        tbl.close()
There should remain visible only 4 fields like is now (Order Id, Order Date, Customer and Ship Via).
You choose what you want to be visible. On any layout, except the default form or browse, you can add and remove fields. I see now that you defined your calculated field for the browse only. I did it for the table so I could use it in the lookup.

Thank you Stan! It is working like I need.

Do you know maybe any option how to achive the same without extra field in the customer table?

I also noticed that my all existing records in Customers table were not automaticaly updated (fill new field FullName with concatenated values). I had to edit one of that two fields to trigger calculation in FullName field in each existing record. What I have to run to update automatically all existing records after such cases?

                            Recalculate field rules.

Sorry no. The table lookup rule is devised to retrieve values from a field. If there is no field, nothing to be looked up.
