Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    python integration

    A question from newbie:

    are there any ways to run python scripts from Alpha and receive results from it?

    Re: python integration

    Hello webzee. Welcome to Alpha. We are a community of friends here who generally refer to each other by name. So we ask that you offer your name so that we may address you by name.

    I'm thinking it might be common enough that some folks know what you are referring to, but i certainly do not. So, what is python?

      Oh, ok. Call me Vadim, it's a name.

      python is a quite famous programming language - www.python.org

      I got a plenty of useful scripts which I wanted to integrate in my new A5 applications.

          //never heard
          no big deal.
          let's just call it an external script like vbs, java, ruby...

          Mike, you seem to know A5 very well.
          I am wondering if I can run an external script or windows programs inside an A5 script?

            Some VB is adjusted to work, but for the most part... no.

              Hi Vadim,

              Did you ever find a way to do this?

              Thanks!

                    @ Mike Python has been around for many years. IT is available for most websites, At least it is for mine. Kind of like PHP in being available.

                      there are system call functions available in alpha like
                      sys_shell, sys_shell_wait, sys_shell_result
                      are these of any use to call your python script like
                      something = sys_shell_result(<your path to python.exe> <your path to python script>)?

                        while I have no knowledge of python and its capabilities here is what alpha did for me

                        Code:
                        dim myVar as c
                        myVar = sys_shell_result("python C:\users\govindan\documents\python\myvar.py")
                        ?myVar
                        = gandhi

                            Thanks, Ghandhi. I didn't know one could do that.

                            I asked this questions because we use ArcGis a lot. Yes, one can use webservices to interact with gis data, but Gandhi's solution would be another route. For example, a colleague of mine wrote a python script that creates a report that includes map images that are generated from a map document. So this would be a way to call such a script from a web application, maybe pass it an argument, and then open the resulting pdf from the web application.

                              Python is an object-oriented, interpreted and high-level programming language with dynamic semantics primarily for web and app development. It's really popular right know and according to: https://www.netguru.co/blog/8-top-co...n-applications used by many well known companies such like dropbox, instagram, netflix and many others.
