    Default HTML Editor?

If a Text Area is to display HTML formatted text that is to be read only, how can I prevent the text area going into edit mode, because the user has clicked into it, which now shows the HTML edit buttons and also the Save and Cancel Buttons?

That's a very good question, Keith. I just tried putting 1=2 into the field's "enable expression" and it doesn't disable the field. I too would be interested if anyone has a solution.

Seems like an odd question, make the field a Label and set display to Special Format of HTML Memo. A Text Area is editable by nature.

Why is that question odder than any run of the mill question on this board? Actually, that solution produces a rather unsatisfactory result since you cannot seem to control the field size, it seems to maximize to the page size. Maybe with a little HTML in the FF area you can control the size? But thanks for the suggestion.

Peter, seemed odd because a text area is an editable object, that's all. You can control width with inline style for the cell. Or via FF with something like:

    <div style="width:800px">{LONG_DESC}</div>

p.s. thank you for editing your response.

That makes sense. But it also seems odd that by putting 1=2 into the field's "enable expression" doesn't disable the field. I guess there's at least a couple of odd aspects to Alpha. Thanks for the HTML, I was thinking along those lines.

    Hi Steve,

I thought if a field was set to be not updatable then it could not be edited, even if the text was not actually saved.

Bottom line is, make the field a Label and set display to Special Format of HTML Memo did the job. Thanks again.

Keith's request is legitimate. I wrestled with this issue not long ago. I wanted the user to be able to modify any other field except the HTML memo.

    Gaby,

Thanks for the example. I totally see what you guys are pointing out. Another way to accomplish the same thing is to make the field a Label, set to HTML Memo AND put the field in freeform area with something like this:

    <div style="height:160px;width:160px;overflow:scroll">{Description}</div>

Its really the same outcome as your "protected" example except you would have an easier time controlling style beyond height and width.

It's the result of studying one of your examples and combining it with other Alpha guru's ideas in various posts. Thank you Peter et al.

Thanks for this thread! I've been wrestling with the same thing. And thanks, Gaby. Your example helped me try check marking the Click To Edit button. My grid is all read only so when I tried making the memo field into a Label and the special formal of HTML memo, the field disappeared. So, I put it back to Text Area and then checked the Has Click to Edit Button property. I also just made the Edit Hyperlink Text property empty. And that worked without having to put in code to hide the Edit Hyperlink Text. ANYWAY, this is great that user can scroll through the rich text without having the Rich Text Editor pop up.
NOTE: I am beta testing V11 so it's possible that something I did worked but would not work in V10.5.
