Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Auto Increment - Starting Value based on a Field in Another Table

I'm trying to use an auto-increment function where the starting value is pulled from a field in another table. In my application there will be a "Configuration" form for users to enter starting values; however, I'm not very experienced and not sure how I can bring that value into an expression. Do I need to set up a relationship between the two tables? Is that a one-one?

Re: Auto Increment - Starting Value based on a Field in Another Table

    1. autoincrement = setup the field(I prefer numeric) and the set the default for the field where you want it to start. I usually give 8 spaces for the numbers and start at 1001.

    2. to set up the other table - the same field name as the main table in the set and same spaces and also numeric.

    3. Whether you set it up as a 1-1 or 1-many depends on what you are going to do with it. If adding only one record to second table to match 1st table record, then one to one. If you are going to add several records to child table per record in the parent table, then 1 to many. now?

    4. If you are trying to just do a lookup(), it does not need to be connected in a set. The lookup can be brought over from the field rules in a field from your one table.

lookup() is slower compared to lookupc() or lookupd(), etc

I hope I understood what you want.

You can get a value from another table with a lookup() expression (among other things).
      There can be only one.

Thanks... I think the lookup() expression will be the way to go. I'm just trying to populate a starting value for a Quote Number field with a user entered value in another table. Beyond that there is no other relationship between the tables.

          Dan,

Are you trying to give the users a way to set the beginning quote number, only, or are you thinking maybe you'd like the users to be able to specify a variety of "starting" numbers over time?

            Hi Tom,

I'm trying to give users a way to set the beginning quote number only.

Good. On the other path much pain lies.

Dan, I can see some difficulties heading your way.
The Starting Quote should be unique?
The subsequent quotes need to refer back to the Unique reference?
                Example:
                Original Quote = [Abraham 123]
                Quote Variation 1 = [Abraham 123, V1]
                Quote Variation 2 = [Abraham 123, V2]

Once you set up the Auto Increment it's pretty much away and running.

Have you considered populating the Quote Number Table with say 2 years of values? Very easy. (You might want to link them to specific staff as well? Quote Range + User ID?).
Another thing you will need to consider is the Uniqueness of the Quote Number so you don't end up with 2 quotes with the same Number.

Re: Auto Increment - Starting Value based on a Field in Another Table

Yes the all quote number values need to be unique and auto incremented based on the starting value. I'd rather avoid populating a quote number table with values if I can achieve a more automated approach. Essentially I just need a user to be able to select a starting value for an auto-increment field.

Not sure I fully understand how the Auto Increment will work for you in practice.
If the Auto Increment is set and the starting value is from another Table, the next Quote will have the next logical Auto Inc value. Unless you overwrite it.
Are you planning for each user to have their own Starting Number for Quotes?
