After pounding my head against the wall on this for several hours, and finally identifying the solution, I figured I'd post this on the off-chance someone else will stumble upon this weird situation.
I had created a simple grid. I added an advanced search component and also an action button (to both the toolbar and free-form).
Live Preview worked exactly as intended. Did some more work on the grid (field configs, lookup, etc). I then placed the grid component on a fresh a5w page and saved it. Then publish to WAS (LAN).
Fire up a web browser (tried Chrome, IE, Firefox) and found the following:
The same approach in Live Preview worked fine.
All sorts of permutations were explored (use image as button type, etc). Live Preview always good. Published page always bad - and NEVER any error or other message. Didn't matter where I published to (embedded WAS, standalone same machine, WAS LAN, WAS VPS). Searched forum, wiki, and even followed through Selwyn's videos (wondering WHAT am I missing?).
Finally... created a new a5w page. Inserted the component (as I had before). Publish. And it WORKED!
I figure something went haywire in the original a5w page even though I hadn't touched its source. And, rather ashamedly, I did not investigate the original a5w source code during my troubleshooting. I honestly think it would not have occurred to me, and would even have dismissed it - since the page is generated by Alpha Five and all.
So, the lesson... if you see good results on Live Preview, but published version (via a5w page) doesn't work, try creating a fresh a5w page (yes, even if you haven't tinkered with the a5w page source).
Yes, nobody else will ever experience this. But, if you do, hopefully the subject line is well-worded to be returned in your search.

- The action button in the free-form (didn't matter whether above, below, left or right) was just a small 3/8" grey button. No text. This was unexpected, as the designed button was blue, an inch wide, and contained text. Clicking on this "button" did NOT invoke the configured procedures.
- There was NO button on my toolbar. I edited the layout for the button, placing some text directly before and after the button. Republish. The text appeared (both of them). But no button between them.
- Upon typing something into the search box and pressing Search, nothing happened. It seemed the button did actually "click", but no search was performed.
