Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A Simple Question (I think)

Does anybody know how to return the value of the date/time a specific table was last updated.
I have trawled through the help / forum / wiki and cannot find the function.
    Can anybody help.
The information shows when you use the database information button (wouldn't it be great if you could export the front tab to excel)
    Thanks in anticipation.

Bob, if you have Audit Trail running you should be able to get at the information in the .txt file.
    It's written sequentially I believe.
Alternatively, I have added a "Last Update" field to a config table in an app which is used to select records for export to a different server.
    See our Hybrid Option here;

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Re: A Simple Question (I think)

Thanks for that Ted. The situation is I have been asked to update an old Alpha 4 system built many years ago by somebody else. In this system there are a large number of tables and I need to create a table that contains all the table names, the number of records and the date and time the table was last updated (not a record) as a number of these tables are redundant but nobody knows which ones. The information I want is all beautifully displayed if you click Database Information from the control panel BUT you can onkly view it on screen. I feel sure there is an undocumented function that returns the date and time value that the table was last updated. Once again thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

A windows browse of the folder for *.dbf files will give you the table name and date.

          Yes thanks Ray.

That actually does not tell you the answer I require as it only reports on file creation - which if you copy files to a new drive or folder becomes the date that you did the copy.
I am sure what I need is contained in the header record for each dbf - it is what shows when you click the database information option on the V10 control panel menu options. I could slavishly transcribe each date from that into the table I have created but feel sure there is a rapid programmatic solution.

How is my favourite and often visited city - heading into Spring I guess - whereabouts are you situated ?

              File.update_time()
              There can be only one.

                G and Stan,

I am just not as quick as you two. I found it in the help file. Knew it existed somewhere.

                Code:
                ? file.update_time("c:\alda\racecar\splash.bmp")
                = 05/09/2011 12:39:10 28 pm

Thanks guys that's exactly what I was looking for.
Stupidly I was searching the help and wiki using "Table "or "TBL" not "file".
Interestingly the search for "update" led me to the table information dialogue but did not go on to explain how the values displayed were arrived at.
                  Many thanks to you both.

                    Sorry Bob
file.update_time() - i hadnt come across it before now.
So I tried it out with a dbf file that i just pulled out of a zip from previous.
It also reports the same date and time that win explorer does, not the date in the dbf header.
BTW Cape Town is lekker (need help with that word?) but it is confused about spring. I am in Camps Bay.
