Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with varible in filter expression

    I am trying to text a report that contains only an inventory item or record that was just sold. I have a button on a form that when pushed I want to save the record (with sales info entered, which also removes it from current inventory) and then sends the text.

    To accomplish this I am using action scripting to do the 3 following steps:

    1. Store the inventory number of the sold item in a shared variable name "num"
    2. Saves the record (which removes it from current inventory and the next inventory item becomes the current record)
    3. Email or text a report with only the one sold record in the report. (I am trying to get this record by using a variable named "num")

    The text is being sent, but the text does not include the sold item, it includes the next inventory item which has focus after the sold item is removed, by saving the record

    Below is code produced by using action scripting:

    '

    query.filter = "inv_num = Var->num"
    query.order = "recno()"
    'replace variables in the filter with their actual values
    query.filter = convert_expression(query.filter,"VE")

    to_param = a5_eval_expression("\"[email protected]\"",local_variables())
    cc_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())
    bcc_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())
    subject_param = a5_eval_expression("Just Sold",local_variables())
    message_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())

    :Report.Send("Just_Sold","TXT",query.filter,query.order,"default",to_param,subject_param,message_param,cc_param,bcc_param)

    Not sure what "query.filter = convert_expression(query.filter,"VE")" does ??

    Thanks for any help or tips
    Tony

    I think a sample of your database would help get an answer.

    2. Saves the record (which removes it from current inventory and the next inventory item becomes the current record)
    Doesn't seem normal to me that saving the current record would make the next item the current record.

    Not sure what "query.filter = convert_expression(query.filter,"VE")" does ??
    When I'm unsure of what a code line or function does I check the help for the function.
    There can be only one.

      To me it sounds like your script has the steps out of order. Are you sure you're capturing the inv_num of the correct record? Have you confirmed that by displaying it in a message box before your script moves to the next step?

        Re: Help with varible in filter expression

        Perhaps I am missing something, but this seems very obvious!
        1-You stored the inventory number of the sold item in a shared variable name "num".
        OK..
        2-You Saved the record (which removes it from current inventory and the next inventory item becomes the current record)..
        OK
        3-Then you email or text a report with only the one sold record in the report.

        NOT OK..

        Hello?!

        Didn't you just delete that record before you tried to email it? How is alpha to find it?
        Didn't you just say after removing that record, the next one becomes the current one?
        Any surprise here (that you are emailing the next record)?
        Any confusion on what needs to be done?
        You need to do step 3 before step 2.

        As an aside, when you say:
        "Store the inventory number of the sold item in a shared variable name "num""
        I think what alpha is doing is simply using one of the current record's functions in the filter which explains why the next record is being processed.

        Yeh.. just looked at the filter, and that's what's happening..after you deleted the record, the filter takes the inv_num of the current one which is not what you want.

          Re: Help with varible in filter expression

          Thanks for the replies.

          I am not deleting records when an item is sold. I have an index (ISBLANK("Date_Sale") and the record is "removed from the browse or view when the field date_sale is entered and the record is saved. This is when the next record has focus and this is the record that is getting sent out in the text.

          I think what I am trying to do is very basic, but I'm having a hard time getting it right.

          Getting the inv_num of the sold item into a variable is what is causing my problem. (I think)
          Thanks

            Re: Help with varible in filter expression

            Not sure what "removed" here means, but regardless..do step #3 before #2 while the actual record is still in focus and you probably have to use xbasic_wait_for_idle() between these 2 steps as you might (will) run into timing issue.

              Re: Help with varible in filter expression

              When I do this step first, then the selling price, sold to info, salesman, etc fields are blank because the record has not been saved yet.

                Re: Help with varible in filter expression

                Save the record
                Send your email
                xbasic_wait_for_idle()
                Delete (remove) the record.

                Alternatively, you could copy the entire info of that record to the variable using something like alltext(), then save/delete or you could copy pertinent info from the field to a global variable to use in your email.

                  Re: Help with varible in filter expression

                  Sorry, I forgot to include, "removed" means that the record is no longer included in the browse or view because of the index being used, removes it from view.
                  Thanks

                    Re: Help with varible in filter expression

                    Well... it has the same effect.. that record is not in focus anymore. You could:
                    Save the record
                    Send email
                    xbasic_wait_for_idle()
                    update the index

                    For the variable to take inv_num the record has to be saved first.
