Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trying to get form variable value to filter a report

    Still stuck, I'll try asking another way.

    While viewing a record in a form, I would like to put a button on the form that when pushed, the value in the field "wtc_num" would be stored in a variable called "num".

    Then I would like to be able to close the form and print a report that was filtered with the use of the variable "num"

    Thanks
    Tony

    Hi Tony,

    To save a long explanation that could be rather confusing, have a look at the Invoice form in AlphaSports.

    Also, dont consider closing the form before the report is printed.

        Simple action script. Look for setting variable based on field on a form

          You can also run a query on the form and base the report on currently selected records.

            and

            Can these two methods still be done if the form is not open?

            Thanks for the help

              No, but in the same area look at variables in action script. You will see a lot of options. One includes to set based on an external table

                I'm not certain what the problem is here. This should be flawlessly easy to have the form button set the variable "num" scoped global, and the report filter use that global variable value in the report filter. I personally would select a more robust variable name like vg_wtc_num, but should work without a problem regardless.

                  Mike,

                  The problem I think is that our friend is closing the form first before running the report, as per his opening thread and message 6.

                    Any reason to not have a Report Table with the list of items to be printed?
                    You could then have a tick to say that there had been a print, or if there had been a failure in the process. (Had to do this at Chase!)

                      Maybe I missed something but I don't see any example of how you are creating the filter. That might help us solve the problem.

                      As someone else pointed out, the variable needs to be global. (And a name like "num" really isn't a very good name for a variable - see this.)

                      Also, I suspect you need to use "var->" before your variable name in the filter definition but can't be sure unless you show us how you're defining the filter.

                        Re: Trying to get form variable value to filter a report

                        Thanks for everyone's help. I used action scripting to write the following code and it is working.

                        'Get 'Value' property of 'Field1' in Form 'TracNew' .
                        DIM GLOBAL wtc_num AS n
                        wtc_num = parentform:Field1.value

                        'Save record in current form.
                        topparent.commit()

                        '

                        query.filter = ""
                        query.order = ""

                        to_param = a5_eval_expression("[email protected]",local_variables())
                        cc_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())
                        bcc_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())
                        subject_param = a5_eval_expression("Just Sold",local_variables())
                        message_param = a5_eval_expression("",local_variables())

                        :Report.Send("Just_Sold","TXT",query.filter,query.order,"default",to_param,subject_param,message_param,cc_param,bcc_param)

                        Now I am trying to format the text that is being sent.
                        Currently:

                        FRM:John Doe
                        SUBJ:Just Sold
                        MSG:See Attached report:
                        Just_Sold???(my calculated field)

                        Just_Sold is the name of the report I use.

                        Would like to get rid of "???" Is that possible?

                        Thanks Again!!!

                          Tony, the message board works better (as a knowledge base for others) if each thread of messages deals with a single question. Suggest you start a new thead for your next question since it has nothing to do with the first. Ok?
