Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need access to report source code or way to do find / replace

Is there any way I can do a 'find/replace all' on a report?

I have a complex report within a set whose detail field has a conditional object with 16 options each of which also contains an RTF field with an additional if then, else... equation.

Is there any way I can do a replace all on the report as I know from experience that editing through the GUI will introduce corruption.

    So far I've tried:

Replace all on the .SEM file - results in a corrupt set
    Export layout - unintelligible output

    Thanks for any help/pointers.

    Hi Jon,

As the layout is not a text document I don't thing there is a simple 'find/replace all'.

Looks like going through all 16 layers of your conditional object.

Another way of doing this is to built separate reports and call them conditionally. Maybe you would end up with 4 reports with only 4 conditions on each report.

      Keith,

Thanks for the response. I already have 2 versions which are called conditionally, but it may be worth splitting further to avoid future problems when I have future updates.

You should be able to use the Object Explorer to make changes rather than selecting each object on each pane of the conditional.
        There can be only one.

Why don't you do find/replace on all RTF's in the table before printing?
If you wish to preserve the original text, add another field.

Looks like I can't use the Object Explorer as the RTF either holds too much data to show in the OE, or the conditions aren't visible. This might have resolved the issue of corruption during the edits, but I'd still have to select each affected object to edit it.

Not sure what you're getting at here. I'm trying to edit a report to replace one field used in a formula with another one. The formulae are held in RTF objects which are within conditional fields.

Thanks for the replies, but it looks like there's no simple way to do this.

G's idea of making another field that is preprocessed prior to the report is the best approach.

Use an update operation to build the value in the RTF field. You can review that process until it's correct and then the report is very simple.

Thanks to you all for the ideas. Looks like I'll have to either have to start from scratch or go through the pain of amending each entry individually.

                    Jon,

I think you have just taught yourself a very valuable lesson. While Alpha is very clever at doing what can be very complicated tasks, because it is being done on a computer, as humans we must remember the golden rule, KISS.

Also, what will it take if I need to make a change.

I can't quite comment on whether it is doable the way you want to do it or not and if doable how, simply because A-I don't have v10 and B-It is my understanding that v10 allows the ability do drill down the report.. so maybe it is doable post-printing so to speak.. but you could accomplish the same thing pre-printing.. so why fight that monster?!

OK, I bit the bullet and split the report into 4. Each containing a few conditional fields instead of all 16!

As I duplicated the original to build each new report, it was simply a matter of deleting the unwanted conditional expressions then modifying the remaining ones to use the correct formula. What a surprise that just 12 hours later I noticed that I needed to amend the header - 4 times!

Thanks again to all for your suggestions.

                          Hi Jon,

To amend the header 4 times must of taken all of 3 minutes after you had done the first one!!!

Are you now sorted as to how each report is to be selected?

                            Keith,

Report selection was never an issue as I already had if..then..else statements in place as I apply a different query filter for each permutation. For info it took me 4.5 minutes to modify the 8 (2 batches of 4) headers.

                            Case closed!
