Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Run Desktop App from a Grid Button

    Hi,

I am trying to run a desktop app from a grid button.

After doing some reasearch, I realized this is far from easy, even when using javascript, or other scripting languages, due to browser security restrictions.

Has anyone realized a way to achieve this using A5?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Run Desktop App from a Grid Button

      Dear Keith,

My grid is for quotation tracking. You can see a list of all the quotations the company makes: pending, issued, lost, etc, etc and work with them.

For each quotation there is a folder in our server. In this folder you can find all docs related to the quotation: pictures, drawings, excel files, etc, etc.

I need a button to open this folder (in a OS Window, not in the browser), so the user can work with it immediately.

Right now I have a MS Access project that deals with the same list. Opening the folder from MS Access is quite straightforward, since it is a Desktop app.

The A5 grid has reached the same level of functionality the MS Access project had (in fact much more). Once I can find a way to open the folders, the MS Access project will be decomissioned.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not sure we are ready to move all our information to the cloud...

Have you thought about using Terminal Services (Built into Windows Servers). This way the desktop app can be used anywhere using Remote Desktop Services. This is how I have my desktop apps run on the web and it is very fast because only screen updates are sent to the remote. All data (Except for Printing) stasys on the server.

Terminal Services will not help me send commands to the user PC.And my A5 project is a web project...

Re: Run Desktop App from a Grid Button

                  I found a solution:

Create a Windows Service, that exposes a very simple Web Service. This Windows Service app is installed in each user PC.

This Web Service receives messages from the A5 Server. The messages have Windows PowerShell comands inside.

The Windows Service decodes the Windows Power Shell commands and executes them in the User PC.

I plan to have this running in a couple of weeks. Then I will post the details if anyone is interested...

How is this part accomplished? "This Web Service receives messages from the A5 Server"

Your correct Steve interresting because the WAS is non persistent and stateless to that "Webservice" on every PC in the network perhaps by RCP <push>.
Other point of attention is the script that executes a EXE? m.......

Re: Run Desktop App from a Grid Button

The service will be running in the desktop PCs.
A5 will be consuming the Web Service.
I intend to use the new v11 web service instructions.

I'll use Xbasic to call the webservice.
