Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Text message formatting

I have Alpha Five automatically sending a text when an item is sold. Is there a way to get rid of the "???".

This is what is being sent:

    FRM:John Doe
    SUBJ:Just Sold
MSG:Just Sold???(then my fields and there are no spaces between Just Sold and the "???" or my first field)

I would like to get rid of "???" and add a space after "Just Sold"

    Thanks

    Re: Text message formatting

There's nothing here or in your other post that indicates where the ? are being added. You mention something about a calculated field. what is the expression for the calculated field?
    There can be only one.

      Stan

The report contains one calculated field:

      alltrim(model)+" "+alltrim(manf)+" "+alltrim(eq_type)+" "+Price_sale+" "+Profit+" Sold By "+"Salesman"

        Re: Text message formatting

I think we're going to have to see what is happening. If there's no sensitive info you could zip the table or set upon which the report being sent is based and attach it here. (Zip it from the control panel so the support tables are included.)
        There can be only one.

          Re: Text message formatting

Most likely it's part of the formatting in the report that HTML could not render.
Save the report as a text file first then send the text file.

Thanks, I'll take a look at trying to save to file first, then send and see how it looks.

              Re: Text message formatting

I tried the report as a txt file and get the same results.
All else is working with the text, so at this point, I can live with the three question marks.
              Thanks

                  Re: Text message formatting

When I send an email of a report (pdf) it works fine. It is only while sending a text that the "???" shows up.

                    Re: Text message formatting

It is the formatting. If you send me an email, I might be able to figure out what's causing it.

I see that I can click on you user name and send you an email, how do I do that within Alpha Five without your email address.
Sorry, for lack of skills on A5 and the message board.
                      Thanks

                          Re: Text message formatting

The characters preceding your message are encoding characters more specifically, the Byte Order Mark (BOM) of the Unicode Standard. These are the hex bytes EF BB BF, which form the UTF-8 representation of the BOM, misinterpreted as ISO 8859/1 text instead of UTF-8.
My email is goofing off and I haven't been able to test, maybe there is a way to trim the first 3 characters from the message or perhaps if you use a different encoding though it is my understanding that most encodings require BOM.
                          This will need more research.

I sent an email to Lenny Forzati. Perhaps he could shed some light on how to remove BOM in alpha email client.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the report. It is something we can live with, it would just look a little cleaner without the "???"
                            Thanks again
