Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rules Editor

When creating or editing Field Rules, the editor can be closed without a warning notice appearing as to whether it should be saved. Is this done on purpose or is it a 'feature'

I have noted that as well I think it is just one of those annoying things. This also happens when you use the inline xbasic editor

      Re: Field Rules Editor

I've seen many users of Alpha who depend upon such a warning message in order to save.....I would never do this as if something does not save for whatever reason, it would take way too much time to figure out what happened (why something is not working as planned!). Even doing this does not guarantee a save as in v10.5 of Alpha I have had several times a set edit not save after making sure I pressed the save icon--I now press the icon twice when using the revised set editor and have not had the issue.

It is important to note that unless you save the field rule changes, depending on how you implement same, they will not be saved!!

          Re: Field Rules Editor

Disclaimer: I didn't specifically test it just now but I'm pretty sure the following works for field rules...

Ctrl-S is your friend! It is very easy and fast to use for anyone who uses the keyboard. I use that so often that it has become automatic and I often don't even remember doing it.

It just amazes me - no, astounds me - how many developers seem to have a need to remove their fingers from the keyboard, grab the mouse, move the mouse to the appropriate location, click the mouse, and return to the keyboard instead of using a quick keyboard action can do the same thing in 1/10 the time - and then tell me they do it that way because it's easier for them. No, it's not easier; they just haven't taken the little bit of time required to learn to do it the fast way. Force yourself to use Ctrl-S for a couple days and you'll only go back to using the mouse in those rare instances where Ctrl-S doesn't work. (Hint: Ctrl-C/Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V often work in places where Copy/Cut and Paste can't be done with the mouse. For those who say the "Ctrl-V" doesn't make any sense, just remember "C" for copy and one key to the left is "X" for cut and one key to the right is "V" to paste - or you can think of the "V" as a down arrow meaning "insert".)

That's not to say that it wouldn't be nice if we were warned. I think there should be a warning. I've just learned not to expect certain things that have been going on for multiple versions of A5 to ever get "improved". They are great about fixing some things and slower than molasses about others. It all depends on what they consider important.

I agree with every thing you say and I do prefer the keyboard to the mouse, it just isn't consistent.

True - but neither is the mouse. There are some places the mouse works and some where the Ctrl keys work. From what I've seen, the Ctrl keys work in more places than the mouse. Also, (and maybe this is what you meant since it's probably the bigger issue here) A5 isn't consistent about showing the "do you want to save" warning.

I did mean that A5 was inconsistent.
