Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how do i autopopulate a field with the current logged in user for desktop app?

    I'm a newbie to Alpha5, and cannot seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong, or the complete process. I would like to autopopulate a field for the logged in user on a form. I have tried all sorts of scripts, etc, and I'm unsure of how to create this. Could anyone please walk a stumped newbie through how to do this? Thanks!

    How would you want it populate it "for the logged in user "?

    You can set a field to autoincrement in the field rules but that applies to all users.
    There can be only one.

      I would want it to populate their Ulink in the field so that we know who is submitting the request. If it helps, the purpose of the form is to submit an event proposal, which supervisors then go in and approve or deny the event. I then want the user to log in an be able to see a list of only their proposals. As we have 100 staff that will be using this database, I didn't want to have to create a query for each an every user ID. But, if someone has a suggestion for an easy to create the query without doing 100 of them I'm game for that, too!

        One of these should help you out:
        API_GETUSERNAME()
        USER_NAME()
        A5_GET_USERS()

          Is this a Web Browser application? I don't see any references to "ulink" in the desktop area. Could well be my ignorance.

            We have 2 fields that we include in any table that is going to be updated by a user: cuser and euser. We also have corresponding date fields cdate and edate updated with either the entry or change date. The user field and date (cuser for change and euser for enter) are modified via either field rules (record event - on save record) or in a script attached to a form.

            We don't use internal Alpha security, we wrote our own, but your method should be similar. When the user signs in, create a global variable for the user-id. In the field rules or the script, define a pointer to the global variable space, and then, depending on if it is a change or enter, update the appropriate field with the GLOBAL user-id variable. Also push the date into the appropriate date field.

            If you need to capture which supervisor approved the request, you would need to have a separate field that would be updated when the supv does the approval - same process, though.

              I did mean for the desktop version, not web. I had initially intended to make our database web compatable, but have since switched gears to desktop only. If the Ulink is only for web that would explain why I couldn't find any reference to it for desktop. I just thought I was going crazy by not being able to find it. :)
