Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Keep the backdrop form and dock toolbar in place with overlays

    I use contextual menus on the left as set up for certain fundamental forms using the full A5 page as a base (containing different objects including embedded browses)

    The user can select options to expand on or process the current object or selection on the main form.
    (Top of picture)
    This often overlays another form, enquiry or browse keeping the base form for background information.
    The user can use the menu to switch between the main form or any overlays
    (Bottom of picture)
    Works veerrry nice, except

    the whole screen appears to jump disconcertingly to the left then when focus returns to the base form another jump back to the right.

    How can I keep the dock menu in place when overlaid objects appear?DOCKJUMP.JPG.
    The options on the menu that are no longer available will disable so thats not a problem - just the position of the left margin.

    There's may be a couple ways to resolve this (if I understand what you are saying). One thought is to make the base form maximized so there can't be any jumping around. If all your calls are popups or dialogs that might work?

      Thanks Peter
      You do have the correct understanding - like "..do the time warp again"

      I've now tried .maximize() on the form, it still fits either right of the docked menu or if there is no docked menu (when the backform loses focus) jumps to the left A5 edge.
      Then thereafter if I use say
      Code:
      vselcode = :Currentformname:BROWSE1.relevantfieldname.value
      filtr="lookupfieldname='"+vselcode+"'"
      vP = BROWSE.VIEWQUERIED("savedbrowsename",FILTR)
      or any other browse, they all appear maximized
      Correct - Dialog s don't cause the menu to go.
      I will try load forms as "dialog" and see.
      Is a "popup" a dialog?

      I can also try the <FORM>.MENUCHANGE() method from within the form - stuff like that if there isn't a known way to fix the left docked menu.

      I know that if I open a docked menu in code, and that opens forms, then the menu remains whatever objects or forms open on top or get hidden.
      I changed that because one Menu cant contain all the options required for a larger ranged system and the style of standard dialog concertina not very pretty.
      Or I could consider building a menu on the form itself but cant be used elsewhere. Maybe a conditional object might work to load other browses or forms.

      Any ideas most welcome.

        Is your menu an xdialog? I guess I was thinking making the main menu a form maxed. Then your other browses are dialogs or popups. Popups are like dialogs but not modal.

          Yes The menus are Xdialog created and maintained using the Toolbar Editor.
          Hmmm. Main menu as a form maxed? Could do - Could change them for different sub- menus, and position whatever I wish to on top of them. Cool.
          And they wouldn't shift under random situations.
          I could still disable options according to selected conditions, and more. They could be made to look like tabs...
          It's worth exploring - i'm starting think of fewer reasons why not. It makes the rest of the job easier.
          Thanks Peter, a good line to follow.

            Even better, you can set the z_order of the main menu form to the back, Then you won't even need to do dialogs or popups. Regular forms and browses will always be on top.
