Default Can a web application be available on both a LAN and on the internet?

I have developed an A5 desktop application that typically has no more than 2 - 3 users. I am considering re-writing the application to be a web-based application that is run from a browser. I perceive the following advantages to doing this:

-- The application would support more simultaneous users without contention/corruption issues.
-- The application would be more easily accessible over the web than using tool such as Logmein or Windows Remote Desktop.

For a user, however, the application will be slower if the database is located on a server that requires internet access. In addition, if the internet is down, the user is out of business. Therefore,

    (1) can the application be configured to run on a local server with access provided to local users over a LAN, while simultaneously allowing remote users to come into the application from the internet using a browser running on a remote computer? And,
    (2) can the local server OS be Windows7, or does it have to be a Windows Server OS?

I may be mis-understanding how this all fits together, so any help is appreciated.

You certainly can you would just point the internal computers to something like 192.168.1.5:80 I did this on a v10 site with server2003 but I cant imagine that it would be a problem on any windows operating system that can run the WAS

Definetely it can be done without any problem on Windows 7 (or XP by the way).

LAN users will always see your Server and you need to configure your router for INTERNET users to see it.

Speed will certainly be an issue for internet users if you run it from your internet connection as your upload speed is limited (at least that is what we have here in belgium). I would go for a VPS with a company like Zebrahost for all users or is your internet connection so unreliable?

Does A5 Web Application Server v10/11 provide sufficient security or do I need to consider other more robust means of security when I open my server up to the outside world?

In reply to a couple of the posts above.
We use the redirect after login for internal and external users, it works well without any security issues.
On another note about speed, we host the external site ourselves now but had to install a 10mb fibre link for it to work well enough without speed problems.
