Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

That looks exciting! The videos referred to a license required to publish the calendar component to a host server. Can you give us some information about that license and its cost, or is it part of the Alpha subscription?

Re: new ..calendar component in v11

I was told it was part of the subscription by email from a sales person at alpha and nothing else was needed to make it work, which is true but missleading. As per Selwyn's video it can only be used on localhost without a license so I contacted the seller direct and just had an email from [email protected] that says I need a single user license ($499) to get it to work over our intranet.

Been waiting ages for this to become available, followed the videos earlier and got it working by publishing to local host. Found quite a few glitches and also things that are not very good about this particular calendar over the last few hours. So I will be looking at others and ways of working with them in a custom component.

      Not very happy!

When you refer to 'glitches', do you mean Alpha bugs, or problems with that web2cal component itself? I guess what I'm asking is, do the glitches seem to be something Alpha can possibly fix? Your post makes me think I might wait awhile to try this....

          There are both.

If you follow Selwyn's video you will be able to get the calendar up and running. (I did have to put a bugs folder on my C: drive to get rid of a server 500 error).

Once my calendar was rendering, I obviously wanted to play around. Entered a few events, a couple of all dayers etc. Found the all day events were not persisting and reverting to a timed entry. Not a great problem, only needed the dialog component to bind to the allday field.

The web2cal component itself has a few shortcommings unless, it seems, you pay for the all singing all dancing version. ($1499). I personally think the left navigation pane is ugly! If you switch it off, the calendar chooser becomes a very nice show/hide item, but there then seems to be no way of navigating from month to month unless I am missing something. Don't seem to be able to have multi-all-day-events, therefore you have to put an entry in 10 times if someone takes 2 weeks leave!

I am sure I will find more problems, but so far I have only been playing for a few hours.

Thanks, Lance, for being the tester/reporter for all of us forum users. :) Will be curious to hear what else you discover. At my level of inexperience in web development, I do appreciate that Alpha is taking on that calendar and writing code that will make it much easier for me to integrate a calendar component into my project. I can't even imagine me trying to do that on my own. So I'm cheering them on towards perfection of it, which I'm absolutely sure is their goal.

Did I read somewhere that there will be associated charts (and possibly Gantt charts) that go with the calendar component? Or am I imagining that just because I'd love to have that for home builder scheduling?

I seem to remember seeing something about Gantt charts as well, but can't find anything on it now. Being in the construction industry they would be more applicable than the calendar component.

more testing done, the calendar navigation is there with the left navigator turned off, the icons are just not rendering. Bubble help comes up where the buttons are and you can get a mini calendar to pop up

Are you reporting these things to Alpha? Do you need us to send care packages as you explore this uncharted territory for us?

I did report the issue with the folder to Selwyn. The others are more niggles that I can work around, but as the work is so gruelling I will take any packages you wish to send!

                    Beer always welcome

Lance - glad that you are playing with it. I'm in there now as well. The licensing issue DOES concern me. Thank you for pointing out the "bugs" folder issue.

Because the calendar component is of the utmost importance for me in near future i also started exploring. Got it "working" at local host en encountered already the same weird things as Lance. (But according to Wiki it is also not ready for testing yet....).

Lance / Jeff could you pls go into detail about "bugs folder" : what is this and what is the cure ?

Have problem with live preview mode: editing doesn't seem to work at all in this mode?

I already brougt to Selwyns attention the way the licence is stored: i will need it for multiple customers (if they can afford :-() and the publishing will be a nightmare if it has to be stored in the calendar component itself instead of the webprofile i think.

Also I need localization in dutch language, this might become a breaking point for my customers i'm afraid if it will not become available

I knew what Lance was talking about when he mentioned the Bugs folder. I had that happen to me before and Selwyn then told me he had left some code in that was trying to refer to a Bugs folder on the C drive that he uses. So until I got the next update, I created a Bugs folder on my C folder and got rid of the error while I was working. We even created one on our deployment servers... (just in case).

Has anyone tried to publish the free version of Web2Cal to an external test server? I'm pretty sure that the Web2Cal licensing stuff requires you to link back to their site. I'm fighting with it but haven't found exactly what they are after. Has anybody done this - and if so, where did you put the link? Bottom line question - if I'm trying to build a test calendar setup and have it on the web where I can hit it - what do I need to do to meet all of the fun licensing requirements?

I do not see how you can make the calendar component inherit the style of the Dialog box..has anyone had any luck with this or will the calendar always have the same color scheme?
