Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    unsubscribe link...

    hello,
Here is my first question as a v11 user.. :)

I'm sending out emails to a group of people, at the bottom of the email i want a link that says unsubscribe (this is obviously going to be a hyper link). i know that somehow i need to have the id passed in the URL of the link from my mailmerge. (my mail merge is coming from MS word, and sending as an email).

once the user clicks the 'unsubscribe' link i would like it to pass their ID number to my site, then a message "you have been unsubscribed" is displayed. in the background i need to flg their record (field = _flg_unsubscribe) to true.

what is the best approach to do this?

in a slightly different method, I was thinking to have the users grid populate the screen and then let the user confirm/save their unsubscribe request, but how do we pass an ID value to a grid and have it auto-search upon loading to display that clients record.

so 2 question in one really...

    any help/pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Lee

    Re: unsubscribe link...

Read all about session & request variables + the breaking changes in v11 (in the wiki):

Session variables can only be strings (type "C"). While this limitation has always been implied, it has not always been strictly enforced it so legacy code may store other data types as session variables. Going forward, this will not be possible, as it will break session persistence.

Session Variables cannot be created directly from a request query string or POST body. This negates the need to use "protected" session variables, as all session variables are now effectively "protected". In order to create a session variable, you must execute A5W code to read the request variable and create or set the session variable. A request for a URL such as http://localhost/index.a5w?session.name=John will not create a session variable session.name as it previously would have. Instead, it will create a request variable which may be accessed as Request.Variables.session.name during the lifetime of that request only.

sorry Lee and Frank. I was understanding the concept of session variables, yet was missing something.
Now with these things that are broke by V11, I am slightly more confused, yet I think the changes will actually make things easier and more understandable.

There is no need to use session variables. In this case, they only introduce unnecessary complexity and consume additional server resources for with no added benefit.

Your link will need to include the id as part of the URL, in what is called a query string parameter, for example http://yourserver/unsubscribe.a5w?SubscriberID=12345

This will result in a request variable, Request.Variables.SubscriberID, which you can then use in your code however you desire.

What specifically has been broken by V11?

                Lenny,
I think he is alluding to what I called breaking changes in v11.
