Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Global variable not retained when declared in autoexec

    Hi there,

I defined a global variable gd_btch_strt in autoexec define global variables - variable list. Going back to check that I had done it correctly, it was gone !! Tried again - same result. I have been doing this for a long while and have never had a problem. I then defined global variables - initialized at startup, and it was retained.

I defined the same global in scripts where the global is used as dim global gd_btch_strt as c because I thought this was necessary to advise the script of the globals existence - apparently not - Commenting this out and script works fine.

Does Alpha5 drop any globals that are defined in Autoexec define global variables - variable list if they are defined elsewhere in any script ?

I need to understand what is going here.

    Looking forward
    Dave Mac

I'm not sure what this means, Dave.

Are you saying that in an autoexec script you coded the following:
    Code:
    dim global gd_btch_strt as C
and then you look into the "V" toolbar while in the Code Editor and see the Global Variables list and the variable gd_btch_strt is not there?

      Hi Mike,

      Thanks for the reply.

I have completely lost sight of the fact that the Script Autoexec is not shipped with Alpha5 (Autoexec being essential to kickoff my system)
but that I created it so long ago -

      To clarify :

I Select the Control Panel / I then select autoexec script / I then select the "V" toolbar and add a global variable to the variable list / I then close Global Variables

When I repeat the above and look for the Global variable that I have just added - it is no longer there !! When I add the variable to the Initialized at startup it is retained

      Trust this sufficiently explains

      I attach a Screen dump

        Dave

See the attached, When you use that genie to add global variables to the variable list, as the caution states that they will not be remembered the next time you open the data base. To have them remembered you would have to use intialized at startup.

        or

You could create an autoexec script that initializes the global variable.

          Hi Tom,

          Thanks for that.

I have always understood that to mean that the global var would not retain the previous value, not that it would not retain its existence. I was reasonably sure that I have added global var to the variable list and they have been retained ? I even tried a few. You're right. I must have been mistaken. As Mark Twain says in my footnote.
