Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem with AlphaDAO Import Genie Importing From Visual Foxpro to A5

    Hi,

I apologize if this isn't the correct forum, couldn't find one that was more appropriate.

OK, I have a Visual Foxpro (VFP) application that I want to transfer to A5 with ultimately having it reside in an SQL backend. I through I'd first import it into A5 and then use the A5 upsize wizard to SQL.

It's a very large application with a number of tables with hundreds of thousands of records in a number of the tables.

Current it works fine until I get to what is ostensibly the Invoice Header table, and it dies where the progress bar at the bottom of the screen says 87419 of 203369. Here is the error message I get.

    ImportError.jpg

Is there a log during the import process that indicates any errors along the way? I went to the 87419th record of the table and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong, but of course the progress bar goes in increments of about a 1000, so it could be anywhere I guess between 87419 and 88419 ...

The settings I've selected from the AphaDAO Import Genie are pretty standard, here is a version I did with only trying to import the table that I've had the problem with (there was no problem with about 50 previous tables, and there are about 15 more tables to go after the problematic one.) Here are the settings:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

What I did was upsize in VFP. Then all you have to do is create the alphadao link to the sql database.

there must be something about that table that a5 does not like.

i suggest you try importing just that table.
      presumably it will fail.
then edit the table structure (making a backup first of course), and remove some fields. then test again. see if you can find the field that that has data in it that a5 does not like.

        Selwyn,

Thanks for the tip, but before I start, I'd like to clarify, are you indicating to drop some FIELDS versus RECORDS? I've got 74 fields and 203000 records, and it dies at about the 87000 record ...

          Frank,

Thanks for the tip, I must have my stupid hat on today, because I've tried to do the upsizing but I get caught in what appears to be a chicken or the egg on where to start first. I'm trying to use MySQL and I don't seem to have that option to select when I try to do the upsize. Should I try to create a MySQL DB and then create a connection string to that?

I'm using the latest version of VFP, Windows 7 64 bit, MySQL and NaviCat ...

Thanks for any help you can provide, this would certainly seem to be a faster approach than first going A5 and then A5 to SQL (if I can get the A5 import to work <G>).

Re: Problem with AlphaDAO Import Genie Importing From Visual Foxpro to A5

what i am suggesting is that, using a copy of your table, you drop fields.

for example, if you have 74 fields, i suggest you drop the last 37.
so now your table has the first 37 fields. can you import that?
if yes, then you know that the problem is in the second 37 fields.
so make a table with the 2nd 37 fields.

then divide this into two pieces and repeat this process till you isolate a field, or fields that have data that a5 does not like.

once you have isolated the field or fields that are bad, you can try to isolate the records that are bad
if you have 203,000 records, create two tables with 100,000 records each and try importing those. find out which table has the bad records. continue this process of divide and conquer till you find the bad field and row number.

Another option is to open a default browse in Alpha 5 and sort each column in ascending and then descending order and look at the first few values. Usually corrupt data is found at the beginning or end of a sorted column..

I had the same issue back in ver10 when I started using mysql. Just use the import functions inside navicat.

I agree with Chad. Navicat is the way to go.
