Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Tom,
    Different properties are available in the e object depending on which event you are in.
    Using debug(1) in any event will allow you to browse through the e obect to see what is there - wysiwyg.
    So, there may not be a recordcount property in that specific event.
    Again, what-you-see-is-what-you-get.
    You could consider placing your code in a different event - I am not near a developer machine during the day so I can't even make a suggestion.

      Hello Andy,
      My grids work off of arguments that are derived by session variables. In order to use debug(1) I need to use the Working view. I have no session
      vars defined at that level. Unless I try to fake it, debug(1) seems like a potential good choice but in "my real world" the component won't run
      without that needed info, thus no working debug?????

      Further, the complicated nature of trial and error of opening up each and every event to try and see if it supports a particular property seems
      like a serious "lack of design" by the A5 team. Why should I have to "go looking" for something like that when it should be "LISTED" somewhere.
      That is similar to looking in every 50 apartments of a burning apartment building "wondering if anyone was left inside when a directory of it's
      occupants would prove to be extremely useful in such a situation.

      How can Alpha be so good (on one hand) at giving us such powerful software and then (on the other hand) leave us hanging by a thread on
      many of the instructions that would make using it truly a joy. I'm not the only one, but I've seen here on this forum where people have literally
      wasted of days trying to find a solution to a relatively simple problem.

        You are a little out of touch here with recent developments. Several weeks ago, we added to a5 the ability to use debug(1) in Live Preview mode. This was added in the pre-release build, which became the official build recently. So there is no reason that you can't explore the e object's contents in your event handlers.

        Even if it were not possible to debug into an event you could easily use this technique to see what's in the 'e' object that was passed into an event handler

        dim txt as c
        txt = property_to_string(e)
        save_to_file(txt,"c:\debug\e.txt")

        then run your grid, and look at the file e.txt that got created.

        The e object contains a huge number of properties (including many properties that are really meant only to be used internally by the Grid).
        The properties that we think are of interest are documented in the function prototype.

          Re: How do you get Total Records count in an Xbasic function?

          I'm trying to make my own RSS feed from a dialog and a timer.
          It is working nicely... I can read a record, display it and after a few seconds loop to the next record and so on.
          Problem is, I have no way of knowing the record count in advance so that if I reach the end I can start the count from the beginning as in:

          t = window.setInterval(function() {
          var recordcount = ????????
          var counter = {dialog.object}.getValue('JOB_ID');
          if (parseInt(counter) == parseInt(recordcount + 1) {
          {dialog.object}.setValue('JOB_ID',127);
          } else {
          {dialog.object}.setValue('JOB_ID', parseInt(counter + 1));
          }

          e.__si.RecordCount does not work in a dialog onDialogInitialize event.

          BTW, I am pre-populating the dialog via action script in onDialogInitialize.

            Michael...not sure what are you trying to achieve. Are you trying to make a dialog behave like an RSS reader?
            Where is your feed coming from - the web? Or are you simulating a feed by checking the database for new records?

              e.__si.RecordCount does not work in a dialog onDialogInitialize event.

              I am not sure why you expect this property to have any value in a dialog component. This is a property of a Grid component.

              What are you trying to get a count of?

                I'm simulating an RSS feed by periodically displaying records in a job listings table.
                When I reach the last record I want to cycle back to record 1 and start over in an endless loop.
                My fields are ID, Title and Description.

                  this is not really answering the question in a way that will allow someone to help you.

                  still don't know what you are trying to count.

                    I don't think you mean RSS at all.
                    You wish your dialog to loop through existing records continuously, correct?
                    In javascript, you can set a timer that runs continuously, and keep calling the "next record" dialog object's function.

                      Re: How do you get Total Records count in an Xbasic function?

                      Ok, perhaps this would work in illustration:

                      For N = 1 to RecordCount
                      ...do something
                      IF N = RecordCount THEN N = 1
                      Next N

                      RecordCount refers to the record count of an sql table.
                      I need to know the value of RecordCount.
