Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

is there a way to disable a user from copying data shown in a grid?

I think the title of this post speaks for the subject.. :)

however, if a user is displaying a grid, is there way to prevent them from copying the data? (i.e. by not allowing them to select the data in the grid and/or then copying it by right clicking the mouse, or prevent them from pressing control c, or prevent them from going to edit and clicking copy...?).

for example, if i use a temporary worker, how can i prevent them from loading a grid and copying and pasting the contents of clients grid to their own email...?

Others with more experience involving web pages will have better options than I do.

From my stand point this is a management issue and should be handled via contracts with the temp worker. I have seen webpages that stopped users from selecting text and coping and pasting them to another application. How this was done I do not know. However I do know that the time invested in this technique was quickly circumvented. I can just as easily take a screen shot, paste it into mspaint, save the image and run an OCR application on the image. Or even easier using a pen and paper I could hand transcribe the information. Another option is I can use my camera on my cell phone to take a picture of the screen. Then when I get home I, and have all the time I need, I can do what ever I want with the data.

In the end, it is my opinion that if you place the data in a viewable format on the screen you cannot stop me from copying the data. You can place road blocks in my path to make it more difficult or time consuming but you cannot stop me. Thus, I believe this is a management issue best solved by hiring dependable employees and having signed contracts outlining how the employee can or cannot use the data and the consequences of breaking the contract.

I completely agree with you. If someone is going to copy the data then i want to make it as hard as possible to do it... if not impossible (i know it is very possible).
I'm toying with hiring a couple of temps, to work remotely--which poses its own risk... i appreciate your input and will probably not even bother with a temp if the risk is too high.

      thanks again.

Sounds like more trouble then it is worth. Regardless of what you do, they can always use Print Screen on their computer. If they can see the data, they can probably retype it into something else.

If you are worried about this data, maybe it should not even be displayed based on a person's group level after login.

you could show summary data first, then have them click to see detail for the rest. not as easy if they have to do multiple screens.
On the other hand, if you feel you can't trust them with your data/equipment, you might as well get rid of them.

With my customers, I ALWAYS sign a confidentiality agreement which says I will not copy, transcribe, or use their data in any way. If you are showing any proprietary or sensitive data to anyone (temps, employees, vendors, etc..) it is good to have one in place and also make sure you specify legal recourse (mediation, arbitration, etc.. and place very, very, very high damages) in the contract. This usually circumvents any ideas so ripping off data. In my case, I am the party viewing the sensitive data and I have never had a problem signing one of these. Also, make sure the agreement includes the party that recieves the data, not just the party that you have the agreement with. In the USA, anyone who receives stolen data is has culpability also. I know this did not address your question but it might make it easier to sleep.
