Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Can't start new file?!?!

Frank - don't know - I'll try that in a few minutes. I do my raytracing on the weekends and the machine in question is chewing on a big street scene right now. I'll do email and forum posts while it does that, but I like to stay off other programs.

I do know that I can open a db by selecting it in Windows Explorer, right click, open with....

That is not what I mean; if you don't see anytjhing in your webprojects then I'd be curious to know what you see in the corresponding folder in explorer and that new button in webprojects (top right) comes in handy to open explorer at that location.

        Re: Can't start new file?!?!

And - on the bright side - Version 11 seems to run just fine on my laptop. I put a copy of my application on that hard drive and opened it up. I haven't played with it tons yet, but when I publish it to my localhost, the whole thing seems to be running without a hitch. Well, one minor hitch - one page is putting the content below my left navigation - one page, one minor layout issue, that I know how to fix. All my fancy schmancy buttons and lookups and drop downs, login protected this and that, and other data gymnastics - all seem to be working nicely without any adjustment. How cool is that? I was totally expecting to have to do some adaptation.

Once I'm in a project, that folder button does take me to the folder. And my issue may be closer to Dr. Gary's issue after all. I hadn't gotten far enough to tell before. But check this out - that folder shows grids etc., yet the dbx in A5 does not. Velly velly intellestink.

                I'll sell you a "not"....

                OK - let's compare systems:

                Here's what I have:

                i7, 64 bit, 2.8 GHz, 8 GB Ram
Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, SP1, and up to date on patches
Networked to a server, but only for data (not running any software off the server)
Video - NVidia GeForce GTX 260 - Driver version 8.17.12.7533 dated 5/20/2011 I can't remember how much ram I have on the video card, and can't remember where in Windows 7 I find that!
Single hard drive, no raid array.
                Cordless logitech mouse.
                Virus software is Kaspersky.

Laptop that's running A5 V11 correctly has same mouse and is on same network, and has same virus software and is also i7 64 bit, with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit operating system - and is NVidia for the video, but a different card.

                  Re: Can't start new file?!?!

Here are some screen shots to show what is happening, the files are called 1,2,3, and 4.
                  1. shows that when v11 first loads, the components do show
2, shows that when I click on a5w pages, no pages show
                  3. shows that when I now go back to components, none of them show (they did just a moment ago)
                  4. shows that all the files do show in Explorer

                    Dr. Gary

Can you post your system specs?

I'm also getting naked screens for web components, but the components showing in the folder. So we have that in common.
Can you start a new file by selecting New from the File menu?
Can you open a new file by selecting Open Database from the File menu?

Gary, I suggest that you report these screen shots to Alpha as a bug report.

Gary are you using the open project in explorer option from inside of alpha web project choosing the option or just opening the file through explorer manually?
