Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upgrade to new version and small network

I currently have A5 V7 desktop which I use on 1 computer to run a database I made. What would I have to buy to upgrade this and how would I use it on 2 or 3 computers connected by a router. They are all desktop PC's or Laptops (no server) using windows XP or 7. Any advice appreciated.

How would these computers be connected through a router?
Is the router being utilised as a switch (it would have multiple network cable connections or within wifi range)?
Or are the computers each on their own ISDN Router?
This query should be posted on V7 as opposed to UK Users to get worldwide help.

Richard, the PC's will need to be able to share data. (No server, I presume this will be run in a Local/Small Office Network)
That's the first thing to set up and test. You will need to investigate SHARING as it is different in XP and Win7
Once that is established, I suggest you look at how to getthe data available on the PC's.
There are a number of options.
      Runtime.
This will enable you to connect to your database using the RunTime engine. The RT lives on each PC, and the Database resides on ONE PC which will hold the master data.
      Development.
If you have multiple editions of Alpha, then one on each PC will do the same as the above, but you will need to tie down the options to wreck the database which a Dev version will allow.
Given that V7 is a bit dated, you might as well get the latest version and Runtime as well. Conversion won't/shouldn't be too difficult and you will have an up to date app. and dev environment.

There is one last option if anyone has V7 RT still available. (Not sure but I'll look)
Send the Database to a helpful soul, who will build a RT version and send it back to you.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Re: Upgrade to new version and small network

Thanks for your comments. I am working with the home / small office network. Files like Word and Excel or Folders can be shared and modified between XP and Win 7. I'm just trying to find out / check if this worked with Alpha 5 also. I take it you would have the developer version with the full database ( all forms, reports, code etc and Tables) on one computer (always switched on) and have Runtime on the others which then uses the records (Tables etc) in the first computer.

There is no need to have a full version of A5 loaded unless you are going to manage the application on site.
Typically the Database will be on one machine, and the Runtime - on each PC - will handle the transactions.
