Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Only want creator of form to be able to edit it

    I have created a form and would like only the person who created it to be able to edit it, how can I do this?

    Open it in design mode, choose Save As, use the Password button to assign a password.
    There can be only one.

      I currently have 7 staff who could possibly be creating records using this form. At the bottom of the form is a field for them to type in their name. This field is a lookup field from my employee table. It fills in the name along with their password. The password field is hidden. I would like for the password to match that hidden field before they are allowed to make changes.
      I think if I do it the way you suggested it will only create one password to be able to edit the record, I would have to ensure that all employees using the form would have the password, then any of the employees could change a record even if they didn't create it. I want to prevent this from happening.

        Hi Carol,
        Creating the form is something a whole lot different that creating a record on that form. You could add this to the OnInit event for the form to restrict changes to the records:

        this.restrict_change = .t.

        With a button on the form you can have the user enter the password and test it against the saved hidden password then allow only that user to edit by changing the above command to

        topparent.restrict_change = .f.

        In the OnFetch event for the form, or OnSave just add the restriction again.

          I read your post to mean that only the person who created the form be able to edit the form (not a record).

            Thanks MoGrace & Stan,

            Sorry for the confusion - I should have read what I typed before I posted.
            I assume this button on the form would be done using Xbasic? I have just started trying to use xbasic and I am having trouble figuring the code out for this, any help?

              Oninit event for form

              this.restrict_change = .t.

              button to try to get permission to edit

              Code:
              password = "Alpha5"
              user = ui_get_password("Password","Enter the password","","&")
              if user = "" then
                  end
              end if
              if user == form_objectname_of_password_field.value then
                  ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
                  topparent.restrict_change = .f.
              else
                  ui_beep()
                  ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
                  end
              end if
              onfetch event
              this.restrict_change = .t.

                Have you looked at the Security settings?
                It is easily possible to allow different levels of access to forms and records by setting a master password and creating Users and Groups.
                Create a password for each user, and assign them to a Group. I have Read Only, Full Access, Partial Update groups.
                They can do what their group says.
                The Form has the code to allow what actions can be taken based on the Group.
                I also have the Audit trail for changes and deletions turned on.

                Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
                You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

                  Re: Only want creator of form to be able to edit it

                  One slight change to the first line of Stan's button script would get the value from the password field hidden on the form and set the variable to that to test it.

                  Code:
                  password = yourfieldname.value
                  user = ui_get_password("Password","Enter the password","","&")
                  if user = "" then
                  end
                  end if
                  if user == password then
                  ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
                  topparent.restrict_change = .f.
                  else
                  ui_beep()
                  ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
                  end
                  end if

                    I am not very familiar with xbasic, but this is what I have done and it's not working. I'm not sure what I have done wrong, can somebody help me?
                    When I type in the password I get "Invalid password" even if I have entered the correct password.

                    password = vpassword
                    user = ui_get_password("Password Required","Please enter your password:","","&")

                      Re: Only want creator of form to be able to edit it

                      I think it is this part:

                      password = vpassword

                      What is 'vpassword'? Is it a variable or the object field name on the form? If it is the latter, then this should work

                      password = vpassword.value

                      However as it stands, it looks like you are trying to pass one variable to another.

                        I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere! Thanks Stan & Mograce for all your help. I have one more question.
                        When the correct password is entered it says "accepted", when the wrong password is typed it says "Password invalid" just like I want it to, but after the correct password is accepted it will not allow editing.

                        I have the oninit event on the form set as: this.restrict_change = .t.

                        The code for the button is this:
                        password = Nursing_Visit2a.nurspswd
                        user = ui_get_password("Password Required","Please enter your password:","","&")
                        if user = "" then
                        end
                        end if
                        if user == password then
                        ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
                        topparent.restrict_change = .f.
                        else
                        ui_beep()
                        ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
                        end
                        end if

                        What do I have wrong?

                              You discover the object name of an object on a form by right clicking on it and choosing Properties. What is the object name of the field on your form that contains the password (does not need to be visible in view mode)?

                              Did you try my example?
