Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Looking for a compatible third-party gantt/scheduler control

    Hi folks
    1) In general, what third party controls/libraries are compatible with A5?
    2) I am looking for a scheduler/gantt control similar to this one http://www.exontrol.com/exg2antt.jsp . Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Jaime

The example you link to looks pretty impressive, and appears to be something that could be integrated to A5, though I didn't look very deep. Fusion Charts also produces terrific results.

I used that exact control for an airport staff scheduling system i wrote years back in visual foxpro, that control is extremely powerful, to the point when i asked the question i wasn't expecting to find that level, but maybe something a little similar, with at least the important features.
Nevertheless, how can i know if a control is compatible? Should i look for Javascript controls?
Took a look at FusionCharts, looks nice but they are only charting, and in my opinion their prices are prohibitive...

Re: Looking for a compatible third-party gantt/scheduler control

A good general view is that if you can do it with all the other programs listed there, you can do it with A5. A5 has given us the tools to work with nearly everything out there. So while I didn't look too far into it, the chart you show can use XML for much of its properties and content, and JS as well. A5 can work with and generate both XML and JS so it wouldn't take more than a few hours to develop a good model and framework for making these two work together. It looks interesting enough that I've bookmarked the site to try this should I ever ever have the time.

What I'm pointing out, in other words, is that to know whether a third-party control can work with A5, it's first necessary to know what input and output is associated with that third-party control. Then, check to see if A5 can send/receive/interface with it. You're going to find, for the vast majority of products like this, A5 can work with it.

Re: Looking for a compatible third-party gantt/scheduler control

Steve, I've only briefly looked at the new calendar component in V11, but quickly decided that it probably won't be what I need for including a home builder scheduling feature in my app. I am not at all experienced with using XML, etc., etc., so will be interested to learn what you come up with if you try something like you mentioned above. I am interested in the Gantt look on a calendar, especially the one that site shows with line by line tasks and time sliders. As exhausted as I am migrating the rest of my CHS application to Alpha, I would probably be willing to pay someone for this type of feature.

I went down this road as well. When a component that is A5 happy presents itself, I will use it.

In the meantime, ive gone to using www.smartsheet.com for my gantt charting. For each project, I have a field in A5 that stores the sheet location. User renders the gantt from my app, besides the look difference a bit, for their use, they are staying in our app and they dont have to go log into another system. Plus side is its extremely powerful and lets my project managers email read only links to the gantt charts to customers. The weakness is an admin has to create the sheet and log the link into my app on job setup.

Fusion charts will do the gantt with enough effort. With V11, I have more unimplemented "features" 'than time right now. Gantt's will bubble up eventually.

Re: Looking for a compatible third-party gantt/scheduler control

Well, let me look this weekend at what's required to build a gantt chart model -- something that others can use with some amount of ease -- using A5 and FusionCharts.

Keep in mind FusionCharts requires a license, but it's not that much in the larger scheme. You can also work with the unlicensed version -- it just has a watermark label.

I would build this for the web, and for SQL back-end.

I'll invite potential users of this to go to the bottom of this page of samples, and note that gantt charts can be in so many different designs for different reasons. I'd welcome some feedback from potential users of this as to what kind of gantt chart ya'll might want. A calendar view of some kind, maybe with some accomodation for hours, seems at first thought to have the most potential use.

As if I needed something else to do and promise people....mutter mutter...

                Steve,

Count me in. I would be an interested user if you came up with a tool / plugin.

I think the attached gantt fits the bill from the Fusion portfolio. This one has the benefit of start and end dates, while showing tasks and gantt bars.

It took 10 minutes to figure out how to insert the exg2antt to A5 forms

                  Here's the result:

                      Mihai?? As in Mihai Filimon?
In your screenshot, have you used connection to data or loaded XML? I'd prefer SQL connection of course, but i am comfortable enough with xml to use it if needed...

I posted a video on my A5FusionCharts site that shows what I've done this weekend for A5 and Gantt charts. See the Videos page -- I put a link right at the top.

This method achieves two very important things:

                          1. It makes it easy for you to design your chart without having to worry about coding; and

                          2. It provides a method to construct the chart with data from your table dynamically with each page load.

There's a lot I could do, but I think this constitutes a decent start.

This also assumes some familiarity with the installation of FusionCharts with/for A5, but you'll find some good instructions there on my site as well. I'll probably package up just the Gantt chart capability as a separate/standalone feature rather than integrating it to my existing FusionCharts Genie.

Comments invited and welcomed. Does this fit the bill for those who need it?

Lookin' good, Steve! I like it. Whenever I decide to start working on Schedules, I'm going to need Gantt chart with months like you show, but am also going to need one that shows the days of the month (similar to one at BuildTools.com). I'll be doing charts with a Job as my session variable, but will also be trying to do ones with a Trade Contractor as the session variable and tasks that are a combo of a job and a task (because trades might be working on several jobs for a builder and would be nice to send a Gantt chart to the trade). Looks like I'd probably be able to accomplish that with my grids and your tools! I'm excited, but not ready to begin working on that feature just yet... but it's coming and I'll definitely be looking at yours. You rock!

Carol - now that I have the basic framework in place, I can add and enhance all over the place.

I've added a choice to display by Days or by Months. You can further specify how many days or months show in the chart before you need to scroll. The result is shown in the attached screenshot.
