Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

          It may be that Mihai:)

For those that may be intereseted we have added the xbasic to supported programming list, so the exhelper can show the xbasic language, as explianed here:

          http://www.exontrol.com/exhelper.jsp

Please ignore the message those who are not interested, and sorry I miss the point that you were looking fro some web based control. I was thinking that it is not able to be used, but it is at least if using the /COM version.

Jaime - FusionCharts don't have facility to act as input controls. You can do some nice stuff with hyperlinks, such as drilldowns, etc.

Based on feedback from a couple people, I've added a fair bit to this genie. The attached screenshot of the setup dialog shows what's available so far.

This looks entirely plausible as an a5 integration.

I'll be doing charts with a Job as my session variable, but will also be trying to do ones with a Trade Contractor as the session variable and tasks that are a combo of a job and a task (because trades might be working on several jobs for a builder and would be nice to send a Gantt chart to the trade). Looks like I'd probably be able to accomplish that with my grids and your tools! I'm excited, but not ready to begin working on that feature just yet... but it's coming and I'll definitely be looking at yours. You rock!
                Me too.

                    Steve,

Carol and I talked - we pretty much need exactly the same thing. (We may even talk about double teaming on our development efforts in general). Anyway - I also need much more long term planning than the calendar provides, with task dependencies etc. When I first looked at Fusion Charts it looked like the price put it out of my reach - http://www.fusioncharts.com/license/ , but now from the link in your post (thank you for that!) I'm seeing the free one - http://www.fusioncharts.com/free/Comparison.asp. I don't think what I'll need is especially elaborate, but it's hard to tell from the chart whether the free one would have any glaring shortcomings. What have you seen as you worked with it? If I'd be trying to do construction schedules, where when an early task runs over, the later tasks that depend on it automatically get adjusted - would that free one do that?

Re: Looking for a compatible third-party gantt/scheduler control

Wendy (and Carol) - the free version does everything the paid version does. The only difference is that "Evaluation Copy" label.

Most developers here would just need the Website license for $399.

As far as the chart's date range, you're unlimited, bound only by what you can usefully display (even if you choose scrolling). Right now, I've tied up all ends to the little genie I've built, and have it so you can show days, weeks or months, with an additional top-level header for years. I haven't done the task-dependency piece, and won't be including it right now but it can be done with just a few hours' work on my part. Gotta stop somewhere right now.

Keep in mind the chart isn't making much in the way of decisions -- it's just reporting the data. So if you have dependencies it might be best to "map" them in your table and then let the table adjust for over/under-run of any dependency. Just thinking out loud here: If TaskA starts May 1, and should take 10 days, then TaskB 2, dependent on TaskA, can begin on May 11. But if TaskA runs to May 12, your table just needs to adjust the days out. A little work with trigger and stored procedure would be really powerful in recalculating everything. You could even have an "Expected_Days" and "Actual_Days" column and probably show a layered-type chart to show how far behind/ahead you are on the project. Again, just thinking out loud, haven't done this part yet.

And yes, it's nice to see some other chart offerings out there. But for the feature set and the pure beautiful look of Fusion Charts, the others don't come close.

I'm pretty swamped but trying to bundle up what I have for sale at IADN in the next few days. I'd be glad to work with you and Carol for the additional features you may need. Bonus: my dad was a contractor, I've built or helped build scores of houses plus my own barns, workshops and additions.

Very cool that you have construction experience, Steve. A few months ago, I played with looping xbasic code on a grid, and succeeded in updating the begin and end dates for dependent tasks when changing the begin date or duration days on a task. Sounds like the charts will use the dates from the grid after its been put through the loop and that will be great!

yes - very cool. I'm going to download that free version though and see what it looks like. For my purposes I couldn't have it say "evaluation version" and I don't see anything about that in their comparison of free vs paid. From that list it looks like they are not the same at all, but don't have that label. So, that free one might be sufficient. When I get a few minutes to download it and see what I can see, I'll let y'all know.

I'm pleased to offer the Alpha Five / Fusion Charts Gantt Chart Genie.

It's available through the IADN store here.

A video preview/overview of the genie and how to use it is here.

In short, this makes it easy for you to create really beautiful gantt charts on your A5W pages, driven by your live/dynamic SQL data.

Trust me -- if you need this, you want this tool instead of having to code it yourself.

Just wanted to let you know that all is working great with the Gantt Chart Genie. You have, once again, saved me a bunch of time by figuring all this out for me (us). Simple to use, simple to setup and Fusion charts makes great charts.

                                Thanks.
