Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is this feasible

    Hi All,
    We have a few different appointment letters for our web app, is it feasible to show a single button for the letter and in the background have an IF statement for which letter to print.
    At the moment we have the letter buttons in a grid and the one thats needed is shown by a show/hide IF statement (see PNG attached).
    As you can see not very elegant and the letter list will only grow.

    Re: Is this feasible

    Here's one way - but you need some Javascript.

    Let's make some assumptions... your Print button is calling some Action Javascript that opens your letter.

    First, make sure you have a copy of your grid - once you make these changes there's no going back. We're going to be changing the Action Javascript to "actual" Javascript.
    If so, then get into the Action Javascript dialog and click Text Mode at the top.
    This will leave you with a dialog and a bunch of tabs at the bottom. The first tab is ok... leave that one alone.
    The 3rd tab - labelled Declarations Global is what we want. Click on that and you'll see all the Javascript that runs your letter.
    Get your cursor in there and scroll down to the section that looks like the following:

    Code:
    	var ro = new Object();
    	ro.hostComponentType = 'Grid';
    	ro.reportName = '[email protected]';
    	ro.reportNameShort = 'ltrClaims';
    	ro.reportType = 'Letter';
    You can use a Javascript if statement or, better yet, use the Javascript Switch statement, changing the ro.reportName and ro.reportNameShort in each case of the Switch statement.

    Whatever you base your current show/hide on can be used for the Switch statement. This is taken from w3schools.com

    Code:
    switch(n)
    {
    case 1:
      execute code block 1
    case 2:
      execute code block 2
    default:
      code to be executed if n is different from case 1 and 2
    }
    Hope that helps. If you need more, just shout.

      Re: Is this feasible

      Does the switch function work in A5? I also saw this at W3schools, and was just working on this today and can't get it to work. It always returns the 'default' value. This is in the onChange event of a dropdown:

      Code:
      var tp = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','TYPE',{Grid.RowNumber});
      switch(tp)
      {
      case 1:
      	{grid.Object}.setValue('G','TYPEDESC',{Grid.RowNumber},'Type 1...');
      	break;
      case 2:
      	{grid.Object}.setValue('G','TYPEDESC',{Grid.RowNumber},'Type 2...');
      	break;
      case 3:
      	{grid.Object}.setValue('G','TYPEDESC',{Grid.RowNumber},'Type 3...');
      	break;
      case 4:
      	{grid.Object}.setValue('G','TYPEDESC',{Grid.RowNumber},'Type 4...');
      	break;
      default:
      	{grid.Object}.setValue('G','TYPEDESC',{Grid.RowNumber},'Type not recognized.');
      }
      I checked it with:
      window.alert('Type:'+tp+':');
      and the var is getting the correct value - a number.
      What am I missing?

        Re: Is this feasible

        Hey Dan,

        Yes... it's just Javascript so will work. The problem is what "data type" is being returned from the .getValue... and in this case it's a string.
        So, either use case '1', case '2' etc. or

        var tp = parseInt({grid.Object}.getValue('G','TYPE',{Grid.RowNumber}));

        to turn TYPE into an integer. Either one should be ok.

        It's the little things that drives you nuts, huh.

          Got it, thanks! I thought it might be something like that, but don't know enough js. Have to run out now, but will give it a go as soon as I can.

          Thanks again!

              Re: Is this feasible

              Hey Dale,

              I don't think you need so much in each case statement. You're including all the settings that don't change but you don't need to do that...e.g. ro.hostComponentType = 'Grid'; will not change from case to case. Just include those settings that will change... like the report name.

              Code:
              switch(n)
              {
              case 1:
                var ro = new Object();
              	ro.reportName = 'letter_GC_NL@ti_1.alb';
              	ro.reportNameShort = 'letter_GC_NL';
                break;
              case 2:
                var ro = new Object();
              	ro.reportName = 'letter_GC59_NL@ti_1.alb';
              	ro.reportNameShort = 'letter_GC59_NL';
                break;
              default:
                var ro = new Object();
              	ro.reportName = 'standard_app_letter_NL@ti_1.alb';
