Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database Upsize Genie Experence

I am doing this thread so others can see what they might run into doing an backend change over.

I have a fairly large aplication that uses a .dbf backend. I have 165 tables that take up 1.5gb. Since I have been seeing everthing going to the web I figured I would start by changing my backend to sql before I would start making a web application. I went with mysql. Setting up mysql went without a hitch.

I figured I would do a test run to see how everthing would work once I made the change. I made a backup of my complete app and used the "Database upsize genie"

I would say most of my problem getting the genie to work were problems with my database. The major problems were I had bad data in my tables. Problems were multi records with a key field that should have had only one record per key that I had anywhere from 2 to 3 records. Date fields that the user messed up when inputing the date where 1997 turned out to be 0197 and other date problems.

I have now been able to get my application upsized without any error messages after starting fresh with the genie and deleting the sql datebase after every error message. What I am seeing now is I have a number of forms that will not open up and get different error message about not finding a file. I have not started yet into looking as to why I have these problems. I figured I would see a large decrease of time doing querys which I have not seen. I have not run any speed tests but it seems to be slower that before.

My application for lookups uses a dialog where as you type what you are searching for you have a box below with the suggestions that are close to what you are looking for and you then select from the short list what record you are wanting. In opening these there the dialogs are blank and as I type I am not getting any suggestions. I have not looked into yet as to what this problem is or how I can fix this yet.

I will update with more info as I learn it.

Thanks Jack, this is valualble info.
An update would be most welcome so we can build a "How to" based on practical experiences.

      Re: Database Upsize Genie Experence

I have been running into all kinds of problems with my application working with a mysql backend I decided I would go and take alpha sports, do an upsize on that and see how well that works. First problem I ran into doing that is it does not like maped tables. Said since the map table had more then one auto increment field, I needed to fix my table before continuing.

I then figured I would then just export the customer table to mysql, then come back and create an active link table of customers and see if I was going to have the same problems. Well answer is I do. When I create the xdialog on a regular table everyting works perfect. When I change to a active link table is when the problems happen. I create a variable, make it a record list- list box. I then define the record list, the table is my active-link customer table. Colums in record list are ID and the name fields. Return value is the ID field. When I go and preview I now have two columns of the ID numers with one descirbed as the ID and the other as the name. When I go and view the table it looks like all of the info is pulled from the sql datebase correcty. I am going to list what I did and create a bug report.

        Re: Database Upsize Genie Experence

Finally got some time today to download the new update to see if it fixed the bug I found. Even thou it was not listed as a fix I was hoping it was fixed. It has not been fixed yet. In the past I would get a responce back fairly quick as to what was happening. On this I have not heard anything. In looking at all of the bug fixes they all had to do with the web. I hope they are not giving up on the desktop.

I have been doing some testing, things seem to be a little slower there before. I guess I was hoping for a big speed increase on some of my forms but have not. It might be the way that I have my tables and sets causing the problems. Now that I have a test database I might try making a new table that pulls it's information from a number of sql tables since in playing with doing querys with sql I get my data back quick.
