Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha sports sample

Is there a real world sample application on alpha five for beginners? wherein good practices in real world apps is demonstrated? to mention one,
i tried alpha sports, i found out that by clicking invoice, i am immediately on the first invoice, is there a way not to display information
when it is not needed in alpha five? a blank invoice should appear if i enter a new one. and the information is readily edited, end users will edit data accidentally.

    Emily, welcome to the Forum.
Alpha Sports is an example of some of the Alpha capabilities. I don't believe - in fact I know it isn't - a recommended way of designing and building applications.
Having said that, there are many excellent examples of the correct way to go about things if you want to avoid trouble.
You can design your app any way you want, so if you have a specific question, please post it and you will get a few sensible answers I'm sure.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

can someone post a template that is being used in production? i believe beginners like me can learn from a good real world application. i'm sure all the gurus here must have had previous clients, hope they can share, beginners will tend to imitate any example, and by looking at alpha sports and being new to alpha, i might think that it is the right way to enter data in a one to many or many to many relationship tables.or i might even imitate every style of the alpha sports sample. Thanks!

is there a way not to display information when it is not needed in alpha five?
Yes and no. A form in Allpha Five is a means of viewing a record in a table. As such it displays whatever record you direct it to diaplsy. If you create a button to open the Invoice form to a new record, it will be blank except for the autoincrement invoice number.

The Invoice form in AlphaSports serves double duty. The menu button that opens the form opens to the first record. From there you can navigate to other records for viewing, editing, etc If you choose new from the Record menu, you are presented with a blank invoice. As you learn more about Alpha you will find that you can change the properties of the Invoice form so that records are not editable until some other action is taken. Perhaps you might put a button on the form that changes the form into edit mode. The event of fetching a different record can be coded to reset the form to read only.

        The possibilities are nearly endless.

a blank invoice should appear if i enter a new one
That will happen but using the button in AlphaSports doesn't enter a new one.
        There can be only one.

Emily, suggest that you work your way through the Tutorials [Alpha Control Panel/Help/Tutorials], skipping bits like how to design a database if you are OK with the subject matter.
Even if you are a seasoned developer, there are significant differences between what you know, and what/how Aplha does things.
Without the Tutorials, you may struggle to understand the terminology.

          As for a "template", you are asking someone to post their hard work and technical efforts. This presupposes two things;
          a) they are comfortable letting the world see their approach and intellectual copyright flying out of the window, and
          b) sure that you won't sue them for bad advice.

If you want an example of how to do a particular process, and it's not clear/missing/incomprehensible in the Help and Video Tutorials, post the specific question and you will get some examples - possibly all different - for you to try out.
I doubt that you will get any sort of template, but I could be wrong.

            Hi Emily
Welcome to this community. Everyone has been new, sometime.
I dont believe any two of us does things in the same way, degree of precision of lockdown, useage, methodology (anything from Action Scripting hybrids through to Xbasic and Xdialogue) or presentation style even for the same subject matter.

Asking for a template of a real world application is firstly VERY broad as to as application purpose and functionality.

I have seen for example, more than 10 different approaches just to invoice. And if two looked and worked similar there would be no similarity underneath. Which would you learn?

Secondly there is a fine line between
a.) asking for help overcome a hurdle with snippets of generic code or b.) whole sections of propriety work.

You may not get too many of those. And you would struggle to change on your own.

On the other hand, make a start on a project you have in mind. Determine your desired strategy, and whether its in the planning, implementation or finding a problem making something work - even ask for the first steps of what you want to do.
Ask as many as you need but one topic, suitably headed per question, so others may later search the topic and find help themselves.

Thank you so much for all the advice, i happen to came across a video tutorial of a feature in alpha five wherein a value is immediately deducted or added to a value in another table, e.g. in an invoice app, a quantity invoiced is deducted automatically on the products quantity on hand, once an invoice is deleted it is also added on products quantity onhand. How do i do this in alpha? can't remember where i viewed that tutorial.thanks!

              Edited................
Got it..... it's in posting tab on field rules

                  Possibly Field Rules, Posting.
Get there by selecting the table in Tables/Sets, Select design, Field Rules

Now wouldn't this have helped others later if you had made a new posting titled something like
Where do I find automatic postings
                  or
Automatically add a value to another table
