Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Charting Examples? Have I missed Something? Please Help..

I have been waiting for a charting option for a while and now its launched in v11 - Yippee

The only documentation I have found to date is located here --> http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Chart+Control+V11

Is this all the documentation that is available? I have spent 4 hours attempting to add a graph into a report where the chart shows data for the qty of yes and
no in a number of data rows from one table. No that difficult in theory and simple to do in other reporting software but have not been able to achieve this.

Have I missed something here and is there more samples available or is more coming?

In my opinion from a reporting perspective the charting control has been one of the most important things added in Alpha 11 and would love to see 6 or so examples on how to use this chart in a few different situations.

    Thanks for reading.

    Regards

    Joe

After a few days no replies.

Interesting. I won't be updating if I can not fully understand the charting options.

I think the charting can be a massive selling point but we really need a dozen or so examples.

Maybe even have a sample database dedicated to charting options etc.

    Just my thoughts.

Joe, deconstruct the Alpha Sports Sales Chart if you haven't already done so.

Hi Ted I have tried but had no success.

The data used in the example is from a data set and I wanted to work off 1 table via report.

I think Alpha 11 is a very powerful program and the evidence in this is the amount of power and flexibility the charts have. In saying this I can only sit in front of the PC for so long trying to work all of this out.

Would be great to see the developer of the graphs come up with a dozen examples. Its the examples that will sell the software.

Things in my opinion should of either been kept more simple or had the options broken down more so its more simple to use. In a matter of a couple of hours I was able to create reports with Charts via VS2005 & CR and having spent more time I have struggled with this v.11. I would also like to point out I am an experienced Excel user as well.

        Thanks for replying.

Re: Charting Examples? Have I missed Something? Please Help..

Am I missing something? In checking the message board, I find very little about graphing calculated data in/from a report. This post is 2 1/2 years old and there are few that are newer. The link referenced on this post No longer works. I have spent several days trying to graph data on a report. I cannot find any information that will get me where I want to be.
I assume one of several things has happened - either the secret to putting graphs in a report is hidden and I have been unable to find it or everyone has given up trying to create reports with graphs using the desktop application within Alpha5 V11. Whichever it is, I would appreciate some insight. I have a client that has specifically asked for some graphs.
            Thank you

Have you looked in the Alphawiki?

Re: Charting Examples? Have I missed Something? Please Help..

I have been to the Alpha wiki, I have viewed all of the available training and Demos, I have tried to adapt the pie chart in Alpha Sports, I believe I have done it all and still cannot create a chart. It appears others have gone outside the Alpha world and are using 3rd party charting programs. This being the case, I would appreciate recommendations as to compatibility and ease of use of these programs. I have been tooting the benefits of Alpha software since Version 3. This is not the first time I have had a problem, but it is the first time I have not found a solution (usually with the assistance of the good people on the message board)
I have convinced my client to move "up" to version 11 because of the advanced features, like charting. Right now I feel kind of foolish because they were happy with all I could give them in Version 5. I would appreciate if someone could direct me onto a reasonable path where I might be able to give my clients what I thought Version 11 could provide.
                Thank you
