Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is it possible to populate a dialog with a data from a DBF table? Error says SQL only

I am playing around with the trail version of this software. When I try and populate data in a dialog from data in a DBF I get the following error
Only SQL tables supported for automatic generation of CRUD statements
. I followed the instructions seen in video D21. The error is saying this can only be done with SQL databases, is there a workaround so this can be done with Alpha Five Databases?

Thanks for the reply Clipper, I am clicking the populate button in a dialog I made. It is suppose the populate the empty fields in the dialog with data from a table using the onclick javascript function "Populate Controls in a Dialog Componet with data from Tables". It is using a account number as the key field. For my quick dialog test I setup the populate button as show in the training video linked in my first post.

Should work. When do you get the errormessage; if you click on the populate button?

I just downloaded and installed the latest patches to Alpha 5 11 and now it works. They must have fixed the issue in the last few days. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Well maybe I was too fast to jump to that conclusion, it kinda works, but it populates the wrong data.

Well it sort of works, I played around with it some more and it says for most items "Record was not found" even though it does. For other record numbers it just changes my input to another number. In the picture below I entered account number 4 but it looked up account number 37. Weird, any ideas?

Are you using the same field to enter the account nr searched for as for displaying the found value???

Thanks Clipper. Yes that is what I have been doing. I figured out why it was not working though, I did not specify a primary key field in the data bindings so it was using the record number instead of the account number field.. duhh, sorry I am really new to this.

Once I solved this question it immediately raised another question; what if I want to populate data using a field that is not set as the primary key? Say for example to be able to populate a dialog if a user enters a account number or a phone number but not both? I do not need to right now but I may run into that as I try and expand this.

if you want to use the genies to populate the data in the dialog, you need to specify a primary key value. if you want to retrieve data by some other field that is not the primary key, then you need to compute the primary kkey for the record that you want.

for example, say you want to populate the dialog for the record where "lastname = obama". you would do an ajax callback, run a query, find the records, then get the primary key of the record that you found.
