Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Smart Field Type Missing

I have raised this before and hoped it was fixed in V11 - it isn't.

When placing a field on a form in properties you can make it a smart field - the glaring omission is a "path select" field type - it is shown in the help examples if you click the question mark to the right and is available if you are using xdialog - so why not in smart fields ?

    Re: Smart Field Type Missing

Thank you for pointing this out Bob. I just started using Alpha Five v11 2 weeks ago and wondered how to get a folder/directory in a field vs. a file name. I didn't see this in the smart field list either but I thought being new, I was overlooking something.

As a work around I did the following:
    1. Added a button next to a field on a window.
    2. Used an "internal" image in lieu of text for the button 12-11-2011 1-12-08 PM.jpg .
    3. Used "action scripting" to perform the functionality:
    12-11-2011 1-10-35 PM.jpg

I think the way that Alpha works is that when you save a button with logic attached, it also saves the event logic. So you should be able to copy and paste the button for future use or add it to the new control library I found within Alpha on the toolbox. This should save you the time of worrying about a bug fix, if that is really the problem. I am too inexperienced to know for sure.

Bob, did you do a bug report? I have not had very much luck with the bug reports I have sent in with V11 since they all have to do with the desktop. In the earlier days of V8 & V9 before they did all of the web stuff if you sent in a bug report you would get an email back right away. The last few I have sent I get no reponse and when the next patch comes out the bug is not fixed

Thanks, Bob for your PM. I agree

I will submit one. Can't hurt.

In looking at Daniel workaround, I think I can make it work. The problem with it is it does not work as nice as the one under the question mark. Since this is a regualar windows form, I wonder if there is a way to access it via xbasic or activeX control.

I was thinking to use the file select to make the user select a file in the folder they are wanting and then cut the file name out of the string. Of cource I can see all kinds of problems doing it that way. I am going to research activeX controls. I will post if I get there.
