Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Now there's a challenge !
    Who will start it off?
    Why not start with indented text - How about:

    1. Buy Alpha 5 software ------------------> (instructional material)
    2. Learn how to install it on:
    -desktop ------------------> (instructional material)
    -webhost ------------------> (instructional material)
    --localhost ------------------> (instructional material)
    --external server ------------------> (instructional material)

    ...... correct/add as you see fit, then maybe Steve will add his references?

      Re: Alpha Tutorial Vidoes

      My suggestion is you start with something easy. You know the "complete" map would be impossible to build. I'm suggesting to help test the theory, see if it merits expansion.

        I don't know that I'm up to the task with this regards. (Or that I'm even qualified) ~ But I can say this with certainty:

        I spent the past 2 winters (when I have time due to the seasonality of my business) pursuing the "desktop side" of a5. (and learning core X-basic from the ground up) I ended up watching the long videos (X-basic 101 & Building desktop apps by Steve Workings & Jay Talbott.) ~ So much info I ended up watching them numerous times (at high playback speed which is an option in one of the recorded formats). The second time through I took detailed notes (using one-note). In doing so, I also added "time-stamps" to the notes to review the reference materials as necessary. It was a daunting task, but this was what it took for me to "get what I needed" and be able to create a way to reference the topics as/if necessary at a later point....

        A tree structure would have greatly facilitated (and "quickened") the learning curve. There was also one major "roadblock" built in to the a5 GUI which resulted in my decision to abandon action scripting all together, in favor of learning "native X-basic"......
        The fact there is no "back button" at the end of he action scripting selection process, resulted in me forever returning to the "starting point" looking for the correct action script to choose. (As I recall, many of them I saw as being similar, but they both did "slightly" different things, which became noticeable as I was entering in actual parameters.) ~ Alpha (Selwyn) never saw the significance of this and thus discounted this missing feature as "irrelevant." ~ I know firsthand that in doing so, not having this feature results in a usability problem for new users.
        ^^ I didn't have time to elaborate on this "roadblock regarding the present implementation of action-scripting, as stated above..... ~ After you get through the action-scripting selection process, and you begin to set parameters for the [chosen] action script.... I can't tell you how frustrating it was to realize I had chosen the wrong one, not being able to go back at that point. (Visually realizing that the parameters were not what I had used before/expected, and that I had chosen the wrong one: From this point I found myself in a "start over scenario" where I had a tough time "picking up where I had been in the list." ~ A back button there would have made things so, so, so much easier...... (at first anyways)

        Frequently, I get the notion (from Selwyn due to his highly advanced perspective) that Alpha is not committed to making it easy for "newbies" to commit to Alpha5. (I'm not referring t about making the financial commitment here.)

        Case in point: Due to the above mentioned missing back button (useless to the advanced user), I found action scripting was anything but a "stepping stone." It turned out to be a roadblock! ~ So I resorted to "going hard core" and learned the right way, from the ground up. (without the help of the action scripting center) ~ Which took a lot of time and effort!

          Re: Alpha Tutorial Videos

          As for the frustrations regarding using the existing training materials, here's my first-hand perspective:

          "You can get there from here." However: If reference material had been presented in the "tree format" as I had suggested a few posts back (what another presumably new user thought was a great idea), it would have cut the learning process time in about half (for me!) ~ Incidentally, this means I could have migrated to the web side last winter, and I'd be way ahead of where I am right now....

          ...To create a learning/reference system as such would be a daunting task I am sure. But as for the results: "Priceless!"
