Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Script causing browser to run slowly

I'm wondering if anyone has advice about why I often get a message from my browser that scripts are running slowly.
Here is a video demonstrating: http://screencast.com/t/RImlDZGX6GN

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

If you Google that error you find that the way to fix it is for your CLIENT to make an adjustment in their registry! It is similar to Firefox adding a checkbox to popup dialogs allowing the user to stop the window from poping up any more windows. Users, curious as they are, will click to stop the process or inhibit the popups, crashing your web application. Unless anyone here knows the answer, you will have to investigate why IE thinks your script is "long running". Here is at least one article that tries to answer that question: http://www.nczonline.net/blog/2009/0...-long-running/

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

Thanks, Steve. I tried the IE profiler that the article suggests and could see that the populating the Detail View seemed to be taking more miliseconds than other things. So I took away the detail view and was able to use my button more times before getting the slow scripts message. But then I started getting it again. It seems like I can click my button a few times for opening the other grid in the tabbed ui, but then it starts to give the message after repeating the button click on other records. Is there something about a repeated action of opening same grid with different filter that could clog up the works? That's what it seems like.. hapens in other areas... not just this grid. Feels like I can't do too much work or I'll make the scripts run slowly, even if grids are closed first. Is there something about the tabbed ui remembering things or holding on to stuff? (Please forgive. I know I don't use the right techy lingo.)

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

Well, I do not get the slow script message in Firefox. And I remember some previous issue a few months ago with that message and HTML memo fields, and Selwyn couldn't repeat in IE9. He finally got it to repeat in IE8. So I'm thinking my current issue could have to do with IE8.

          Hi Carol,

You might be able to avoid the error by turning off Script Debugging in the IE | Options | Advanced Settings.
I know this doesn't solve the heart of the issue .. that being the long script time.

Thanks, Stephen, I tried your suggestion and it did not prevent the slow script message.
Back to the IE profiler results... I can see that one script called eval_code is taking a lot of time. I wonder if this is something I should discuss with Alpha.

              Here's a screenshot of that profiler: http://screencast.com/t/Llerm32iqFS

Actually I don't think it's the eval_code. Each time I click my edit image and open the other grid, the _wf exclusive just grows and grows. 1st time click to open grid was 428 ms, 2nd was 1697 ms, 3rd was 2523, 4th was 4232...

                Carol,
Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm getting this opening detailviews as well.

                Thanks,

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

No, Lee. I still get that slow running script message on IE8 (which I'm staying on to see what my customers might encounter). I am thinking that it may not happen in IE9 and beyond and am going to be tracking what browsers my customers have, and if they get that slow running message, I will suggest they upgrade and see if it goes away. My project isn't far enough along for very many of my customers to really use it a lot, but I think I will know more about it being a browser issue over time.

I am also getting this error in IE8 in version 11, the same application from version 10.5 does not have this problem. I submitted a bug report but have gotten no answer yet.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

I'm getting this in one particular grid only. I thought I read here somewhere about it perhaps being related to memo fields ... but I can't quite recall for certain.
Anyway, this grid of mine had one memo field in it (varchar(max) in SQL). I've since changed it from a memo field in the adb to char(255) .. still a textarea in the grid.
I had no further errors yesterday, but I need to test it more thoroughly next week to make sure its not just wishful thinking on my part ;)

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

I have had trouble with that slow scripts message BOTH on grids with memo fields and ones with a detail view. Also, it seems that when app is first opened, I don't have the issue, but then after performing a few actions wherever in the app, and then going back to a grid that is prone to this script message, it starts to happen. Sort of like some buildup is causing things to run slower and triggering the browser to give that message.

I have had the same problem too when using detail view to submit new records, but only on IE8. Microsoft Fix 50403 might help, but I've advised my customers to upgrade to IE 9 or Chrome

Islip, I have at least 3 issues right now that seem to be specific to IE8 whereas the issues don't exist in Firefox or Chrome.
My point being I'm not sure if a problem is browser specific, whether Alpha is "required" or even able to address it as a bug.
It is a bit frustrating as IE is still the most prevalent browser and the only one officially approved by our I.T department.
