Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

It is a bit frustrating as IE is still the most prevalent browser and the only one officially approved by our I.T department.

I think it is a new issue with version 11 because with v10.5 with between 35-40 users I never had this problem.
The first day I updated to v11, most of the users started having this problem.

I am in the IT department so the solution right now is firefox or chrome but I rather be able to not have to install either one just so people can use the programs.

If that's the case, perhaps a follow-up with Alpha may be in order. I have always had a response from them regarding bugreps.

Sent in a bug report, never heard back, I see the same people having this issue. Between this topic and my bug report I have no idea if alpha five is fixing this issue.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

I went through this recently. Based on some instruction from Alpha, I told the client to try these steps below. I my case it was a SSL website and the client would not take the advice of using a browser other than IE because they could not tell their users to stop using IE:

          The problems we had were:

          - the metioned "script taking too long" error
          - an error mentioning "socket error"
          - an error message during uploading files, although the upload completed

I had the client do the following as we tested:

          - Add their SSL website to their Trusted Sites in IE
          - Go to IE Tools > Options > Security > Custom Level and disable XXS Filtering
          - Turn off Keep-Alive in the Alpha Five WAS.

All problems went away in IE only after this last step of turning off Keep-Alive. I've asked the client to report any decline in performance (I am told turning off Keep-Alive will degrade performance) but they have not seen any significant performance loss.

Just an FYI that relates to trying to see what is running slowly... a great tip from Selwyn for taking a look at internal timing:

go to the server side events - ongridexecute event - and add this code
            e.tmpl.timer = .t.

            then run your grid.
it will show internal timing information.

has there ever been discussion about having an 'A5 tip of the day'

and you can opt to get them by email, or when you show up at the forum... they could co-habitat in their own little shoe-box here in the forum for future reference.....

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

Alpha Five answered me back saying that can't find the problem and that I should send them the database to them so they can re-create the problem. It looks like this error appearing has everything to do with the Size of the table. With smaller tables, this problem has not appeared but the more fields and more rows of data the problem will become more apparent, which why some of us might be having a bigger issue with this then others. I am going to try to get a bigger table of test data to send them since I can't actually send them my databases.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

I too am encountering the "slow running script" error message
                  1) turned off "Keep Alive" in the WAS settings, but it didn't make any difference
                  2) I've proven to myself it only happens in IE8. IE9, Chrome and Firefox run fine
                  3) I get the error while making changes to the data in the grid and always while I am selecting something from a field that has a lookup. Consistently it works fine during the 1st use, but then I get the IE slow script error message when doing another change to a lookup field on another record in the same grid

I have one particular grid with a detail view that always produces the error in the same manner
Data is SQL Server 2008 R2 and proper indexes are in place.
None of the fields in this grid have the varchar(max) property, so I've ruled that out as a suspect

The really strange thing is the grids and lookups run very fast, nearly instantaneous, so to get this error message is totally baffling

I gotta get this figured out and solved. I'm a vendor providing a SaaS product and am in no position to tell the users to change their version of IE or it's settings

Ohhhhh the tangled web we weave (pun intended)

I wonder if Islip sent the database to Alpha and learned anything? David, there are enough of us having issues with this that have customers we can't force to upgrade their IE so I hope Alpha does some focusing on this.

I am experiencing the same issues. Really hope Alpha addresses this. My users are not willing to move away from using IE8 at this time.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

Although I did not think of it for this particular problem, I did solve a "timeout" issue with IE by increasing the default value for Request Body in the WAS config, Advanced tab. It allowed more time for the upload to take place. V11 default is 60 seconds, while V10 default was a wopping 480. That meant if an upload took longer than one minute, they would get an error message.

At least my client now thinks their IE problems are "Alpha's fault" and not mine. Whereas this may or may not be accurate, it allows me to breath and move forward.

Is turning off 'Keep Alive' helping or not? And what does Keep-Alive do? I just searched the wiki and could not find anything explaining it. And, thanks, Steve, for you info about the timeout issue. I think that is good to know. I just sent a private msg to Islip to see if there was any resolution for him from Alpha.

Response from Alpha - has a link that could be useful:

Without an example we can test and examine to find the cause, it is impossible for us to speculate on the problem. We need an example that have been proven to give the result in some repeatable fashion.

One possibility that has been suggested is a very slow response from the server from a slow query.
