Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filtering Report on many multi-select fields.

    Would like to find a best practice for this.

    I would like the user to be taken to a form (perhaps xdialog) which contains several multi-select checkboxes fields(variables) with table populated unique choices. [One of my big issues is I do not know how to construct a multi column xdialog, i normally only use action script]. The user can select a myriad of choices from many of the fields and the report will be filtered on this. I really would like to be able to have default buttons that would fill in some of these checkboxes as well. I am not sure where to go with this. I could hardcode a form but then the choices are not dynamic. I could use many xdialogs in sucession but it would be nice to see all the choices. I noted the embedded xdialog on a form which may be the way to go, but as i mentioned. I do not know xdialog by code very well. Your collective idea on a direction would be appreciated.

    I accomplished something similar for my employee app so I could search and report on various combinations of data that are linked to the primary table by creating a 'ee_class' list. This is a table of logical fields that are checked or unchecked based on various actions as they occur in the main form. Eg. - when an employee is terminated and a termination date is entered, he is unchecked from the current payroll and the termination flag is set. The co_class list provides the default data for each of the checkboxes in the ee_class table that is linked to the employee by fileno. The co_class list is also what I use for the search form which opens with only current employees.

    The set for the search form is
    Employee
    ->Ee_class
    =>Co_class

    For a report the set would need to be reversed
    Ee_class
    ->Employee
    ->Co_class

      John,
      The user can select a myriad of choices from many of the fields and the report will be filtered on this.
      A filter expression has a limit of 1024 characters, a myriad could breach this value. Can you be a bit more exact?

        Here is an example with a dynamic filter created from choices from a dynamic xdialog. It's a pretty high order process and coding, so I hope it helps, for what it's worth. Fun lunch time challenge.

          Mike, your example is great but I will have to evaluate the xbasic as I understand most of it, but it is still like reading Greek to me. Thank you for the sample, I think this is a good code snippet for those trying to do this. Thank you so much.
