Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Query.filter = Left(Field_name,len(variable)) = Variable

    Hi All,

    I figured this query.filter, see Code, and work fine within test.
    I want to have combine it with the "Operation" code which copied from Action Scripts. I had an Query.filter Error at "Operation" Query.filter line.
    Code:
    dim vProjId as c ="11-0014"
    dim tSum as p
    dim qry as p
    dim rcd as n
    tSum = table.open("Quote_summary")
    query.order=""
    'query.filter="left(alltrim(Last_esthd_id),7)= "+quote(vProjID) 'Not work, Cannot find the records
    'query.filter="left(alltrim(Quote_summary->Last_esthd_id),7)="+quote(vProjID) 'Not work

    'query.filter= left(Last_Esthd_id,len(+quote(vProjId))) = +quote(vProjId) 'Not work

    'query.filter= left(tsum.Last_Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId 'It works
    [COLOR="#B22222"]query.filter= left(Quote_summary->Last_Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId  'It works[/COLOR]
    'query.filter= left(tSum.Last_Esthd_id,len(quote(vProjId))) = quote(vProjId) 'It works

    qry = tSum.query_create()
    rcd = qry.records_get()
    if rcd>0 then
    	vMsg1 = "There are matching records."
    	vMsg2 = "Do you want to reinstate again?"
        ui_msg_box("Notice",vMsg1+crlf()+vMsg2 ,UI_STOP_SYMBOL+UI_YES_NO)
    else
    	ui_msg_box("Else","What now")
    end if
    qry.drop()
    tSum.close()
    The Operation Code
    Code:
    'Run a saved 'Summarize' operation: 'Summary_Estimate'.
    [COLOR="#FF0000"]'query.filter = "left(Esthd_id,len(Var->gProjectId)) = Var->gProjectId"  'It does not work 'Created by ActionScripts
    query.filter = left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId[/COLOR]
    query.order = "recno()"
    'replace variables in the filter with their actual values
    [COLOR="#FF0000"]query.filter = convert_expression(query.filter,"V")[/COLOR] [COLOR="#0000FF"]<--- Error Message[/COLOR]

    DIM operation_name as c
    operation_name = "Summary_Estimate"
    If operation_name <> "" then
    	[COLOR="#FF0000"]summarize.run_silent(operation_name,query.filter)[/COLOR]  [COLOR="#0000FF"]<--- Error Message[/COLOR]
    End if
    Neither one of "Operation's Query.filter" keep get the Error Message. Does anyone know what is wrong on the Query.filter ?

    Re: Query.filter = Left(Field_name,len(variable)) = Variable

    John, (Repeat this three times)

    A query.filter must evaluate to a character string.
    A query.filter must evaluate to a character string.
    A query.filter must evaluate to a character string.

    query.filter= left(Quote_summary->Last_Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId 'It works
    I sincerely doubt this is true.

    query.filter= left(Quote_summary->Last_Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId))+" = "+quote(Var->vProjId)

    might work, depending on date types of Quote_summary->Last_Esthd_id and quote(Var->vProjId).
    There can be only one.

        Re: Query.filter = Left(Field_name,len(variable)) = Variable

        I think we've had this discussion in the past. The value passed to query.filter must be a character string.
        left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId is not a character string. Character stings have quotation marks (") at the start and end.

        You can work out how to construct the character string in the interactive window.

        Code:
        vprojid = "ABC" [COLOR="#0000CD"]'establish the right data type for the variable[/COLOR]
        query.filter = left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = Var->vProjId [COLOR="#0000CD"]'try to construct the expression[/COLOR]
        ERROR: No such field

        query.filter = left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId))+" = [COLOR="#FF0000"]"+[/COLOR]Var->vProjId [COLOR="#0000CD"]'see if quoting just the literal part works[/COLOR]
        ERROR: No such field

        query.filter = "left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId))"+" = "+quote(Var->vProjId) 'now do it the proper way
        ? query.filter
        = left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId)) = "ABC" 'doesn't this look like what the filter would be for say a report
        Piece together the various parts you want making each of them character strings.

        "left(Est_items->Esthd_id,len(Var->vProjId))"
        +
        " = "
        +
        quote(Var->vProjId)
        There can be only one.

          Stan,

          How about this,
          query.filter = "(Field_a ="+quote(vName_a) )+" .and. (Field_B ="+quote(vName_b))
          I missing something, but I can not find the solution.

              Glad you got it. Simple when you see the light, isn't it.

              For anyone else with a similar problem.

              query.filter = "(Field_a ="+quote(vName_a)+" ) .and. (Field_B ="+quote(vName_b)+")"

                Bump for Stan,
                So if I want to pass the fieldname as a variable in a function that will change the table, do I do this:

                FUNCTION ReNumber AS N (fieldname AS C,begno = "01" AS C )
                dim tbl as p = table.current()
                tblfld = convert_expression("tbl."+var->fieldname,"V")
                tbl.fetch_first()
                while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                tbl.change_begin()
                tblfld = var->begno
                begno = increment_value(beg_no)
                tbl.change_end(.t.)
                tbl.fetch_next()
                end while
                ...
                END FUNCTION

                Cause right now its not working...

                  this looks wrong to me

                  begno = "01" AS C

                  Check the help file discussion of the FUNCTION statement. I think the default value for an argument must follow the data type, not precede it.

                      Small typo only was here... I was trying to get tblfld correctly. This worked:

                      tbl.change_begin()
                      Evaluate_template(tblfld +"="+begno)
                      Tbl.change_end()

                      I added ui_get_fieldname() so the function could be used more generically with a prompt for the arguments.

                      Tom,
                      I know I have seen it used both ways in a function. I suppose I should be consistent though, since outside of writing it like that in a function, I don't think it would work - like in a dim statement.

                        Robin, if this function is to be saved to the code page of the A5 control panel, then using table.current() to get a pointer to the table you want to change becomes problematic. Or at least it seems so to me. If I were doing that I'd pass a pointer to the desired table to the function, instead. Glad you solved your issue. -- tom

                          That's a good idea Tom, since the purpose for this function is to be used in a right click menu.
                          And since some of my sortkeys are alphanumeric, I need to test for that too.
