Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Will Alpha 5 v11 support TLS v1.2?

    Will Alpha 5 v11 support TLS v1.2?

Will Alpha 5 v11 support TLS 1.2 instead of just TLS 1.0? With the recent (09/2011) BEAST exploit I am wondering what has to be done to support the new TLS protocols. I know that Chrome / Firefox do not currently support 1.2 but IE9 does as does Opera. I have had problems getting Opera (current version 11.60) to work with many Alpha 5 pages under SSL. I would like to be proactive about these security issues.

    Any thoughts / suggestions?

I noticed that Alpha 5 v11 (including December 14th, 5:46 AM - Build 2307-3845) do not support secure TLS renegotiation. What version of openssl is used for the WAS? See this link for a good description of the problem and the patching required. My Apache servers on Centos all show that they have been patched but not the WAS.

I'm not familiar with the exploit but I don't think Alpha will still put a lot of effort into the Apache based WAS as they are moving toward IIS.

        Frank:

The exploit affects ALL SSL/TLS regardless of IIS or Apache or WAS. It is a fundamental problem with TLS versions less than 1.1

I was merely pointing out that my Apache servers (and IIS for that matter) have been patched for secure TLS renegotiation. There are two problems from my earlier post. The renegotiation can be patched for TLS v1.0 and above. The BEAST exploit cannot be solved (although Google chrome is trying a workaround) without using TLS 1.1 or above.

We are in the process of updating V11 to use OpenSSL 1.0.0e.

OpenSSL will support TLS v1.2 and TLS v1.1 in OpenSSL 1.0.1, but it has not been released yet. We intend to update again when it is made available.

Also, you do not need to wait for us to update OpenSSL for you. Simply remove libeay32.dll and ssleay32 from the Alpha installation folder if they exist, then place these two DLLs from whatever build of OpenSSL you'd like into your System32 folder and restart Alpha.

This is also how you can make additional encryption algorithms available to Alpha. We build OpenSSL with a limited subset of algorithms based on licensing and export restrictions (http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Encryption+Algorithms), but we do not restrict Alpha customers from obtaining and using OpenSSL libraries on their own that contain any desired additional functionality.

              Lenny:

Thanks for the info. I installed openssl 1.0.e on the WAS server (I was already running same on development machine) and deleted the files as described above - the TLS secure renegotiation error is SOLVED.

I assume that TLS 1.2 will work as soon as openssl is updated (soon I hope) and would not require additional changes to Alpha 5. I hope that A5 starts using 1.0.e as its default soon as this will eliminate the continued need to remove the 2 dll files manually when upgrading A5.

Alpha was successfully updated to use 1.0.0e yesterday. The next patch released will include it.

The latest news on 1.0.1 was on December 8th, when they announced "OpenSSL 1.0.1 is expected to be released in the next few weeks." The same announcement said that it will include TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2.

Once it becomes available, we will update to 1.0.1.

Thanks for the update Just a question - why was A5v11 released with such an old version of openssl (the files are dated 2009 - and version 0.9.8m was released 02/2010 and contained the TLS secure renegotiation fix)? Since this is a server product I would expect the security updates to be maintained especially when you A5 went through such a major version change from 10 to 11.

Is there a way to disable TLS renegotiation? If so how can I do that? A recent security scan is showing that one of my applications is vulnerable.

                      David,

First you should make sure you are using OpenSSL 0.9.8m or later. You can verify this by checking the version of libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll in Windows Explorer. Alpha has been distributing much newer versions for quite some time, but I do not know what build you are using. If you have older OpenSSL libraries, details to update them can be found above.

Next. make sure your SSL Cipher List setting in Alpha disables SSLv2, which is broken in a number of ways, including not supporting secure renegotiation. The default cipher list we use is currently TLSv1+HIGH:!SSLv2:RC4+MEDIUM:!aNULL:!eNULL:!3DES:@STRENGTH, which disables SSLv2, but if you have an older configuration or otherwise have specified a value for the cipher list, you may have something different.
