Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Action script issue for SQL "Execute INSERT Query on a SQL database" using Excel 2007

I am using the Script Genie for "Execute INSERT Query on a SQL database" using Excel 2007 as the back end database.

In the Options windows, I select "Columns to update". I am presented with column names I have previously entered on the first row of the Excel spreadsheet. Some of these columns are shown as data type "C", others as "E".

My question is how does the Genie determine what data types the Excel columns are? Are there data types other than "C" and "E" - and what does "E" stand for?

Otherwise, I have no problem using the Genie. I usually convert to Xbasic and then work with the resulting code.

    Thanks, Gene.

    I'd go for ExponentNumeric.
    Could be EXPONDIST
    Might be Exponential

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Sounds likely.

But, would you know how the Genie determines what data types the Excel columns are? That is, are the Excel columns formatted a certain way such that the Genie can pickup on the data type? I know for a fact that if the Genie thinks that an Excel column is a type "character" when in reality it is formatted numeric, it will output a character data type to that column regardless.

I don't think it's that sophisticated Eugene, that it actually determines much other than Char or Numeric. You might have to hard code it.
Are the fields you are picking up from formatted as C or E?
Have you tried using MySQL as a backend, or must it be Excel? If you do, suggest you try Toad for MySQL to create the tables. Then you can have Alpha and MySQL running on the same screen and see the changes when you do a refresh.

My application requirements are that I am to write out (SQL INSERT) data to an existing Excel spreadsheet, so I can't use any other backend.

Entire columns of the Excel spreadsheet are formatted either numerical or text, but the Genie still won't pickup the data type correctly on it.

I have even taken the Genie's Action Script and converted it to Xbasic, stepped through with the Debugger, even with args.set("Column1",123.45) as opposed to args.set("Column1","123.45"), and it still will write out the column as a character value to Excel, not a numeric value.

I am still looking for an answer...the Genie must still be looking for something in the Excel column to know what data type to write out.
