Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Can not create PDF

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the help, just trying to get to the bottom of why this should suddenly become an issue?

Before I delete anything though can you clarify a few things:

    1. As I said in my previous post everything was working OK before we went on our Christmas break and we can't understand why this is now an issue One Note and Alpha Five have both been happily working together for at least 6 months... It's very strange!

    2. Are these files required or not: pdfcreactivex.dll, acpdfcrext.dll?

Also, if I delete the One Note driver I guess this will remove some features of that software?

likely that they had an Office update that reset it - I always just delete the one note printer

            Hi Stan,

I would do, however the Amyuni driver is using the LPT1: port still - do I still need this as well as the Alpha Five Printer driver?

                  Re: Can not create PDF

We still use the same method from our 2011 post and we either have to talk our clients through the procedure or remotely connect and go through all the steps ourselves.

Because our apps use Reportmailer to send attachments, it is imperative that we can create PDF,s so this is a time consuming procedure that we could do without. Occasionally we come across a Win 7 or 8 PC that creates the PDF first time without any further changes but this is now very rare, I would dearly like to know why the defaults work on some PCs but not others, XP and Vista do not present any problems.

Hi Ray here is the fix as was published by Michael. back in 2011.
We install anything up to 30 x V10 apps each week on various OS systems and we often get this problem of Alpha locking up when trying to create the very first PDF and load the driver, almost always with Windows 7 PCs. We have never managed to establish an exact pattern or scenario so do not know whether this is Alpha, Amyuni, Adobe Reader or Windows 7 problem. The good news is that it happens less frequently just lately. Assuming that you have already run the App as Windows Administrator and tried to print a report/letter as PDF, then this is how we fix the problem:

First go to Windows 7 'Start' and type 'Services' then run the Services, you should see a list, scroll down then focus on 'Print Spooler' then upper left 'Restart the service' now continue with the following:

                    1) Make sure that you are logged in as a Windows user with administrator rights.
                    2) Select Control Panel, and click Printers.
                    3) Right-click the Alpha Five Printer icon and choose 'Printer Properties'
                    4) Select the Ports tab, then click the Add Port... button.
                    5) Select Local Port and click the New Port... button.
                    6) Enter NUL: for the new port name and click OK. Close the Printer Ports window.
                    7) Ensure that the NUL: port is selected in the Ports list.
                    8) Select the Advanced tab.
                    9) Select the Spool print documents radio button to make the options below clickable.
                    10) Clear (uncheck) the box labeled Enable advanced printing features.
                    11) Select the Print directly to printer radio button again.
                    12) Click the Apply button, and then click OK.

                    Hope this helps

                      Yes very useful thank you.
Even though I install more likely one v10 app every 30 weeks (LOL) - next installation will be v12 on Win8 lets see if that works.
