Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Google Map Markers

    I have a page that contains an html table (not a component) with multiple projects with lattitude and longitude coordinates and a google map. I'm trying to put markers on the map for each project. The google maps API V3 examples got me to this point:

    <script type="text/javascript" src="xxxxx"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function mapInitialize() {
    var myLatLng = new google.maps.LatLng( <%a5 ?SESSION.LATITUDE %>, <%a5 ?SESSION.LONGITUDE %> );
    var myOptions = { zoom: 10, center: myLatLng, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP };
    var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions);
    var marker = new google.maps.Marker({ position: myLatLng, map: map, title:"<%a5 ?SESSION.LOC_TITLE %>" });
    }
    </script>

    which creates the folloing map, which is a bit sparse

    screen1.jpg

    The marker shown is the starting point. Now, I want to add a marker for each project and a title on each marker. Can't find an example that shows more than one marker.
    Can someone help with the API code?

    Thanks,

    Re: Google Map Markers

    I've made a little more progress. The problem is still getting the multiple markers to work. I coppied this, best I could with my limited JavaScript skills from the Google web site, but the map does not render. Could be the logic or it could be the punctuation...just don't know.

    Any suggestions?

    var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions);
    setMarkers(map, sites);
    }

        Thanks, Kieth.

        My fallback position if I can't get this to work is to save the values into a temporary MySQL table, create a grid based on those values, then create the "alternate view" to show the map and markers. Seems like a lot of extra work when I'm already ( I think) so close. But, I do recognize that the key in this business is usually to find something that works, not necessarily what you want to work.

          Re: Google Map Markers

          Well, I finally got it working. One of my issues was I had the zoom set too high and the markers i was looking for were all off the page. So, at some point it started working but i didn't know it! Duh!

                Yes - but what you don't know was how hard it was to get it done. You never know the source of an idea, or how persistent someone has been, to make it happen - I encourage people to be persistent, as you can see in my case it happened.. - but I was reminded that writing the code was a better way - NOT.

                  Re: Google Map Markers

                  Thanks for mentioning that, Bill, however as Pete said, I wasn't using the Alpha alternate view. If I was starting from scratch today, I probably would have.

                  In fact, the only component in the page is a small legacy dialog to choose the center point. Perhaps I could have done it all with components, but in this case the task was:

                  1. Find all jobs needing inspection
                  2. Convert location from the Canadian LSD system to latitude and longitude
                  3. Calculate the distance from a chosen point to each job site
                  4. Sort from nearest to furthest
                  5. Display in an html table
                  6. Show each point (at least the first 99, 'cause that's how many black markers Alpha provides) on a google map centered on the chosen point with the job number as a tool tip.

                  I'd already done 1 through 5, and didn't want to go back and try to put all that in components. Plus, I looked at the code that Alpha produces. It's a lot because they are trying to accomodate everything that someone might want. I just needed a small subset of that, so, I stubbornly refused to start over!

                  Also, it was a good learning experience.

                    Re: Google Map Markers

                    Hi Peter & Pat,
                    I am familiar with Alternative view and have done several test sample.
                    In all my cases, the map point data supplied/related to the grid's data.

                    Suppose i have 5 addresses or 5 dots on the alternate view map.

                    How do i coded my current gps locations as the 6th dot on the map.

                    that is assuming we follow Video # 40 and can assume that i manage
                    to place my coordinates into session.variables latitude/longitude.

                    i deeply appreciate your feedback.

                    Thanks
