Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dialog For Editing Grid Items: Using same dialog for updates and inserts

I am having an issue with using the Dialog component to both edit and insert values into a grid.

I have a grid called gridContacts.
I have a dialog called dialogContact.

In the dialog called dialogContact, I have added the ExecuteServerSideAction with Action Scripting to save the data. I have selected the option "Edit Record Just Submitted". (Image 1)

I have placed a button on the grid row to "edit" the contact using the contact dialog. I use the Action Javascript command "Open Dialog for Current..." with the mode "EditExistingRecord". Everything works fine with the dialog in this edit mode. The dialog shows the current record and when you click submit, it saves the changes and updates the grid. (Image 2)

Now, on the same grid, I have placed an Action Button that uses the Action Javascript "Open Dialog For Current...". (Image 3)

When I click the submit button after I have added the new information, the dialog window stays open. It has inserted the record properly into the database.

I have noticed that the following javascript error is occuring during the save process for a "New Record"

    Webpage error details

Re: Javascript Error: Add New Item To Grid with Dialog

I updated to the latest build Jan 16 and still getting the error. I also changed the behavior on the server side script to "Enter another record" to see if that made a difference and I am getting the same javascript error.

Re: Javascript Error: Add New Item To Grid with Dialog

this question can't be answered by looking at screenshots.

can you send an example that allows us to duplicate the issue on our own computers?

the error indicates that the javascript that was send back from the server has an error in it. the most like cause for this would be some part of the response was not js_escaped, so there is a single quote in the javascript rather than an escaped single quote character.

if you can't send the component, then second best would be to go to firebug in firefox and look at the response that was send to the browser when you click the save button. then send us that response. hopefully, it will show where the js error is.

since we know that the server side action to save data is working in general, it points to something specific about your data, and as mentioned above, the most likely reason is that some part of the response that should have been escaped, has not been. you would only run into the issue if some piece of data in the response needed to be escaped, which does not really happen very often for users in the US who are not working with international characters.

Thanks Selwyn. I will first install the firebug and do some more research. I will check all of the data elements. Will keep you posted.
